Don't know if this is the right place to post this, but what are the going rates for Red DIT/Techs? No camera, just DIT & computer station for backup, stills, & instant dailies-maybe with a backup body onset. It's obviously not nearly as extensive as a viper or f900 show so I was just wondering.

Thanks

350-500/10 short form

Even an old time video assist guy charge $500/10 without hardwares.

NTSC VA system is another $1000-1400/10

$500-$600/10 is normal for me.

I'm charging $500/10 and that includes me, computer, RAID-1 system, CF reader and LTO-3 backup at the end of the day.

Hey Matthew,

is that an add-on to other services (camera hire etc.) or do you sometimes offer that one service exclusively for that fee? Seems like gear rental alone should be about $300 for your kit, not leaving much for your time.

I take it the /10 means max 10 hour call?

I'm sure, I and many other DIT/data management types, would like you to charge an additional $195 or so a day for the computer (before the discount of the camera package of course). You should make the production buy the raid, they should keep it at the end of shoot.

The IATSE DIT rate is 51.84/hour, 415.00/8hours. 1.5x after 8, 2x after 12.

That is a add on hire price. Without renting the camera from me, it is $600 a day. I would like to charge more then that, but no one around here will pay that. It's very much a video town here (meaning that people are butt cheap and have small budgets.)

Yes, that price is for 10 hours. After that, it's $75 an hour.

Thanks Matthew. I think that makes a difference. I would probably do this as well, as value add. As long as I was ultimately making $1500-$2000 for the day, I'll even wash their car! :)

For $2k a day, I will without a doubt throw in a free car wash (especially since if they can afford $2k a day, they should have a nice car;))

Remember market has a lot to do with this. You can get $5-600 a day in LA and NY but not many other places in the US.

That's what I really am finding here. Crew is cheaper here (shouldn't be since there's less work and less available crew compared to NYC or LA) but rental gear costs more because there's just 1 camera house in town and 2 grip companies.

It's all what the market can bare and how good you are.

I think 350 to 500 sounds totally fair...depending on how much gear your bringing to the table etc. I have been a RED tech all week and its a crucially important responsibility, its also a lot of fun but exhausting since your RED knowledge is constantly being tapped by an unexperienced RED crew, producers, even actors, and obviously the post guys all scratching their head....so just be prepared.

All and all, what really makes it for me is when I pop in a CF card and download the most breathtaking quality footage I have ever seen, each time I am beside myself. After a week I am starting to see the big picture...;)

My #1781 is coming home soon in case anyone in the neighborhood wants to go out and play.

Oh, and Mark...thanks man!

Can we stop with the term DIT? It harkens back to monitor calibratin, curve adjusting person who prays that they're not lopping off too much data when they're going into such a heavy compression like hdcam. Also I've noticed at least here in hollywood, the second you say DIT producers roll their eyes and get a little smirk. Its not a complimentary name when in their eyes you're asking for so "much" money.

We like DC, data capturer.

at least DM is funny, I'd rather be called a damn than a dit ;-)

That's tricky Mac, especially if you have a tight crew that's tearing through the shot list and doesn't care to be held up while you're formatting cards. I always try to have both a DM and a tech on set, at least for the first few days of production until the camera department is comfortable with the quirks and UI.

Jeff, how bout DAM, Data Asset Manager?

I've been going by Media Manager (very different from the other digicam shows) and teching also. It's good to know this stuff, they've even pulled me to operate B cam for a few days :P. I'm on my second feature and so far so good, once the crew sees the 4k stills and dailies they get really excited-great moral booster :).
