DIT needed for 1-day shoot in the Los Angeles area (Van Nuys/Glendale) on Tuesday, May 18. We will need someone well-versed with Red Rocket and have their own equipment.

Footage will be shot on the RED as well as the Canon 7D DSLR.

Process involves doing a one light and transcoding the R3D's coming off the camera to 1080p ProRes 422 MOVs. The H.264 MOVs from the DSLR will also have to be transcoved to ProRes 422.

Rate is $300/day.

If you are interested, please contact Charles at charles@petrolad.com.

Thanks!

You want someone with experience and a Rocket powered kit to work for $300/day including their kit? How exactly would anyone who is even remotely professional and lives in LA be able to survive on that rate?

Anybody good is going to want more than $300/day PLUS kit rental of at least $200. My guess is you are either going to get:

A) desperate to pay the rent or
B) no idea what they are doing and 50/50 they'll even show up.

Frakkin' brutal. :banghead:

Hi Blair - I agree with you this is a low rate for someone with a Rocket Card, complete pimped out cart, and the expertise to do the job right.

I'm not troll-baiting when I ask this, but What would you quote for a one day (Tuesday) job like this just so people out there get an idea of what is a fair going rate - that way they don't lowball so much in the future. Pretend I'm a producer with a music video and I just called you and said I need a DIT to transcode on-set like this. I'd like to hire you, and your cart with the bare minimum setup for a one-light+transcode, plus backup to two or three hard drives.

Second quote: No one-light, no transcode. Strictly Data Management (which is What this producer maybe can actually afford)

Just hoping to set people straight on rates out there!

Data Management with a cart, no transcode no dailies would be 250+250 at my indy rate if I liked the production and thought I was helping out a good cause. 250+100 if it could be done on a mobile system (I'd never quote more than one day on that rate though).

One light, transcode to DNxHD or Pro Res, Mac Pro Cart w/Rocket, Dailies onto DVD is 350+350 off the rate card but discounts for full weeks etc.

But to be honest I usually wouldn't quote these numbers around because I think that its easier to come to an agreement in post at a fixed week rate split into pre/prod/post rates. Also bear in mind I would be relatively small and usually work on boutique productions in niche markets so that may effect my pricing. All the above is 10 hour day transport + catering provided by production.

I agree Dan, this is a worthwhile discussion. In general terms, I look at what the expectations are: data security (maaakin' copies and checking the images), "look" management, transcoding, etc. Then I need to know the amount of material expected to be generated and the location of the gig.

1) Copying files onto drives is not particularly difficult IF, everything is working well, the number of requested copies is only 1 or 2 and the number of minutes of footage is low. This basic "data wrangler" job can become far more challenging if troubleshooting is required or if you get handed several hundred gigs of data late in the day and are expected to make 3 copies with a PA revving the engine to run them to FedEx, etc. Data wrangling with a laptop and client supplied drives for a $300/day is a fair entry level proposition, tougher in a place like LA where the cost of living is rather high.

2) Look management requires a bit more knowledge and depending on how familiar the DP is with the RedOne and what aspects of the image they are looking to check this can go from fairly basic to serious technical image evaluation. Anyone with a decent monitor who knows their way around RedCine-X should be getting at least $300/day plus kit rental on top of that.

3) Transcoding with a Rocket card and the hardware to support it requires another level of knowledge and hopefully some actual talent since the "look" applied to the transcoded version will typically be used for dailies and often for creative editorial and in some cases will actually become the online finish media. Rate for the operator might be as low as $400/day if they are inexperienced or the gig is outside of the major production centers. Here in SoCal an experienced operator gets $600/day or more. An actual dailies colorist can get easily get double that. In addition, kit rental would be several hundred dollars - exact amount depending on the actual hardware in use, particularly the primary reference monitor, WFM, etc. As a producer I would budget $1,000/day minimum to cover this base and then adjust based on who I could get and what they were bringing.

The real wild card in all this is how many minutes of footage is being generated as that directly impacts the number of hours it will take. I would also suggest that a night exterior shoot would lead me to hire a higher end guy to watch noise levels, focus, color bias, etc than a studio shoot with a good 1st and good gaffer.

You also have to consider whether the DIT is part camera tech, part data guy and part colorist - (often the case) which requires an advanced skill set you should expect to pay for. IF; the camera department is fully Red savvy, the "look" is straight up, you have enough media to change mags regularly throughout the day, eSATA interfaces, disciplined shooting ratios - then less skill is required of the operator.

For reference (Brook or Mark W. can correct me if I'm wrong) union DIT's get between $50-60/hour. Kit rental on a pimped cart runs $500/day or more, 3 day weeks.

Not intended to offend anybody...You will need a wing and a prayer and lots of luck at the rate of $300.00.

$300 with Red Rocket kit?

Thats just asking for a lot.
DIT for $300 with no equipment I can see capping off at 10 hrs 12 if you like them.
But its rarely 12 hrs, downloading, transcoding, backing up, checking files, making sure no errors or issues the nights get long, then packing up and by yourself?
Get serious.
Now throw in a Red Rocket, which is going to include a system that can handle it, plus monitoring, plus knowledge of REDcine X or Rocketcine and now by then knows the camera and coloring.
A trouble shooter that makes sure you footage is on point.

Thats just not right.

I'll do it for $2.00, and give you $298.00 out of my pocket.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!

Wow the level of disrespect in this town astounded by how people think.

A RED Rocket card is over $5000.00, and Mac Pro tower with all the goodies is over $5000.00, are you following? The skill level to attain the workflow, priceless.

I trust no one was desperate to fall for this, after all the poster is a "Junior Member" let's just REDucate the youngeter.
