DIT job needs a rename

The DIT job needs a rename.

After spending over three decades working as a DP/Operator, I recently made the transition to DIT work in Los Angeles. On set I perform a myriad of duties that really don’t apply to the traditional role or job description of the DIT position in full.

At the beginning of the new millennium, I used to take jobs called DIT positions which had almost exclusively to do with camera setup, things like matix adjustments to match multi-cam setups to basic single camera setup on set, prior to shooting. This was about all we did with tape based cameras like Varicam and Sony F900.

Then came media capture replacing tape. The DIT then became also or exclusively known as a Data Wrangler whose job was the offloading of the camera media on set for post production processing later.

Now DIT work has evolved to a much higher level of workflow. My daily on set workflow consists of live camera signal grading, followed by secure error-checked offload of captured camera media, audio files syncing, primary regrades based on live grades, then export to NLE friendly dailies files like .mov or .dnx. On some productions I even incrementally backup to LTO archive at the end of a shooting day.

I am working on a pricing breakdown that shows how much money is saved by doing all of these necessary steps on set vs being done by post production facilities, because all of these duties except live camera signal grading have separate lines on almost all production budgets in the post production pages. The biggest advantages I have found are that any problems with footage are easily recognized on set and dealt with immediately rather than being discovered some days or weeks later after wrap, and also that the DP and Director’s preferred look for scenes and shots are embedded in dailies struck on set. My metadata workflow includes all this ASC-CDL info for editorial and colorists to refer to months down the line and know how and why each shot/scene has a specific look. A DP who can't be at the final color session can rest easy that their look is known to the post people via this metadata and their look embedded in the dailies.

I apologize if I seem to be rambling or worse ranting, but my post here is to see if anyone has a better name for this position than the old DIT moniker, as the job and it’s duties have evolved far beyond the original version. In this latest daily on set workflow it seems that most of the work involves front-end post production duties, audio syncing, dailies creation, and LTO archive. Perhaps something like Pre-Post Technician would describe it better, but perhaps there is a better name suggestion waiting out there to be discovered.

DIT work has in some ways actually devolved to a sorry state where I sometimes hear of productions hiring little more than interns to show up with a laptop and a USB drive to drag & drop the camera media on to for little more than minimum wages. Ok, like anything you get what you pay for and as the old advertising adage goes “when the client gets what he wants, he gets what he deserves”. I for one would like to kick this new DIT workflow up a notch or two, not downwards though.

Please post any name upgrades you might think of to this thread.

There are already several descriptive terms or roles, each is used to describe the person responsible for what happens between onset camera offload and post/editing.

D.I.T.
Red Tech
Digital Loader
D.A.T.
D.A.M.
Data Wrangler
Data Manager
Camera P.A.

I would consider myself more of a D.A.T. vs a D.I.T. (it's all part of the same job to production, unfortunately) and I have to say at this stage I rarely deal hands on with the camera anymore except when there's a problem, most D.P.'s and A.C.'s are fairly knowledgable about the Red Cameras at this point, and most independent features can't afford or don't even need onset live grading, though that's always an option if or when requested (and if there's enough in the budget). Most features just want me close by but out of the way and out of sight (or out of ear-shot, damn that Rocket fan is loud), they want verified backups and a quick turn around with 1-lite color-graded dailies, they want to immediately know if there's a problem and they want to feel reassured that they have what they need and it looks good for editorial.

Best Boy No, I'm Not Video Assist And Can't Play That Back For You Because I Haven't Downloaded It Yet And Also I'm In The Wrong Union

Lol, pretty much all of those things too, more important to most producers than anything else, always need to have that extra x8 port USB power strip.

Don't forgot office printer repair man and Producer's computer repair or upgrade service.

Good ones Keith, I will provide an iphone charger if I'm not using it, and I definitely don't do playback for those reasons as well as I have many good friends in the video assist biz and I wouldn't want to crash their party.

BTW Shiblon, what exactly is a DAT? If there were a DIS and you added that job to yours, then you could be a DIS & DAT HA HA

D.I.T. = Digital Image Technician, deals with all aspects of the Camera and directly related equipment
D.A.T. = Digital Acquisition Technician or Digital Management, deals with all aspects of the Media and Workflow

So long as my data has been checked, and backed up on minimum 3 drives minites after I have shot it. Then you can call yourselves anything you want.

Your post made my day! True, as long as the job is well done, I don't care about titles...

The thing is that producers in general have denigrated the DIT position by pigeonholing it as an unnecessary camera technician job that AC's can now do. Although this is somewhat true in the main, I'm simply pointing out that the position has evolved to a more complex state and needs to be redefined in those minds as something of value - hence a name change.

I'm just waiting for that day to come when production fails so hard it costs them their jobs, because they cheaped out.

What's that? the budget is too small? Stop underbidding and you won't have this problem.

My observation is that the AC's job has stayed the same, and they're already busy as it is loading up the camera, changing out batteries, checking the lenses, handling focus, and all the other myriad of jobs an AC does. Saddling them with the additional duties of a DIT is terribly unfair and unrealistic.

To me, the DIT replaces the lab, which has traditionally existed since the beginning of filmmaking. To completely eliminate this position is the height of cheapness and stupidity. You've gotta have somebody to check the footage and make sure everything is OK. I agree that there are varying grades of expertise required, all the way from a DIT experienced enough to do final color to a "data monkey" that's merely copying and backing up files. But doing away with the position altogether is very foolhardy to me.

The moment a major data problem comes up, the producers are going to understand the meaning of the phrase "tripping over dollars to save pennies."

Since handling raw camera data is the essence of Post-Modern DIT workflow,
some suggestions;

RMT / Raw Media Technician
RMP / Raw Media Processor
RDT / Raw Data Technician
RIP / Raw Image Processor (may we all eventually RIP)
RFT / Raw Footage Tech

PPP / Pre-Post Processor (maybe just P3)

Please, no more names for this position. Unless we really want producers to get confused more than they already are. :-)

I posted this question on a diff topic.

What do you call the owner of the camera and all that is attached to it?

Besides putting the parts together shot by shot, I would also be the one dealing with offloading to backup as well as checking dailies.

Is there a single name for that?

In an ideal world I'd like the time and facility to be in charge of any on-set look creation while passing off the data wrangling side to someone else, regardless of their job title, but then the sclae of productions I work on I never need to be responsible for feeding a ton of other monitors

Data Wrangler/Camera Support - something I have done when someone wanted to rent my camera with another DP.
