I can Data Wrangle or DIT. I have an 8 Core 3.0 GHZ MacPro with a red rocket card and a calibrated monitor as well as a work monitor. I have raid capabilities. I service all of the LA/OC/Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties as well as travel. My day rate Is negotiable, email or pm me to discuss. You must provide insurance for me to provide gear. My cart daily rental rate is an additional rate. I can handle all of your DIT needs safely, I use R3d Data Manager and Red Cine-X to review and Grade all footage as well as handle transcoding. I can also offer assistant editing work. I am a Brooks Institute Student soon to graduate. If you call any Film Faculty Member and ask them about me you will be sure to hear good things, I have worked hard to make a name for myself at school and Im ready to step into the professional workforce. I have encountered many different situations and have experienced trials and tribulations, I have never lost any footage. My work is my pride and joy and I put my vest effort forth always. I am hungry to work and learn from the pros. I would love to come help out on set in a smaller role to get my feet wet. I can Gaff on a small level, I know most lighting packages, I can Grip, I have Directed a few music videos, I have produced a few projects, I have edited and DIT/Data Managed many many projects. I have to say this, WHAT THE HELL JOEL!!, are you that desperate for work, that green, naive, or was that a typo? I know we are not suppose to price fix, but a normal low day rate is $400 (high of $650 or more). At your rate I would not want to trust you with my film for fear you don't know what you are doing. A DIT handles all the footage, anyone that has any part to play in the making of a film (director, producers, dp, gaffer, crafty, talent, mua, etc), has to trust you at $12.50 per hour, I think MacDonald pays more that that, but most of all, have you ever done this before. Even digital techs that work on stills (my former business), charge $500 per day. Do you carry liability insurance just in case you screw up, and if so, how can you afford it at a rate of $150.00 per day? As a union DIT, my classification is right below DP, along side a camera operator, and trust me they do not charge $150.00 per day. If you are hell bent on lowering the standard of the industry, by all means, keep your rate. But factor this in, you will not be able to reinvest in new equipment, because you will barely just make enough to pay your $500 a month rent for you cheap apartment, and you do us all a huge disservice.

I have a feeling this thread is going to descend into madness.

Some things need to be stated. People make mistakes, but if there is no one there to nudge them back on track, what's the point.

AMATEUR!!!!
The market is gonna die!

You guys are just cruel. These comments are not helping. Constructive with criticism maybe? Dont listen to the negative they have to say Joel, but do take the truth from their comments. Your price is a little low. You will figure it out soon. Keep at it, and don't let anyone bring you down! :)

At that rate noone will take you seriiously, and you will pidgeon hole yourself into the kinds of cheap productions that only pay these rates. Remeber, quacks like a duck, and hangs out with ducks......

And the the thread crapping continues...

I point you to the Marketplace Policy thread, 4th line down

"Please don't pollute threads in which you have no real interest by telling someone that they are charging too much, too little, hounding them for why they are selling their red one, or whatever."

I don't even disagree with what is being stated, a laborer is worthy of his hire as the good book says, but there are actually constructive ways of communicating these points that doesn't involve insulting the guy in a public forum. You have his e-mail address...e-mail him.

I don't agree with his prices or methods at all here, but playing devil's advocate...

I don't know the specifics of the SoCal market and the rates others charge, for their labor or their gear, but I remember my AC days in NYC years ago, and the shear volume of freelancers drove the wages down. I remember working for as low as $75/day to 2nd AC (35mm, short films, non-union production, c. 2001)

I have DIT'd indie features at the high range of what he's charging for labor, (when you break it down into 12-hour days) and I NEVER got anywhere near that kind of daily rate for my gear on those same productions. And I've done this more recently that I care to remember or admit. I don't like doing it for so low, but I don't have a big network of people clamoring to hire me, notwithstanding my efforts.

And ultimately we all have to eat. Some of us have other people depending on us too. While I never advertise rates this low, where does one draw the line between no money and terrible money? What do you do when you can't afford to wait for a better-paying gig that will more than likely not come your way?

Guys, first things first, I dont want to take any work away from you, I made a big mistake in my price quote, I am a graduating film student at Brooks Institute trying to penetrate the market, I have tried again and again to get myself working but everything falls through, I misquoted my day rate by far, Im sorry, I dont want to take work away from anyone. I have not been hired at these rates. I am the only DIT at brooks right now. I fully understand the red workflow, the red camera menus as well as all the DIT duties of Parity checks, Playing back footage in Red Cine to cross check the parity tests with the actual footage to look for errors. I can transcode on set with the Red Rocket Card. I fully understand file naming, debayer settings and the need for my position. I am extremely passionate and fully understand I hold all the footage you have been planning for months. I take great pride in my work and want to do the best Job I can. I have never lost footage or improperly handled anything. I have been struggling to get any work at all. I am a well seasoned post production guy, I know Avid MC 5.5 as well as FCP 7. I can grade on set as well for the DP. I need all of your help as I love what I do, but cant get paid to do it as of yet. I have done DIT work for free for every major production coming out of Brooks right now. I was supposed to be on a feature but I got snaked by a DIT who is doing the Job for less than I was charging so I clearly see the frustration and problems that come from undercutting other fellow DIT's and I promise to think clearly next time, I could use all of your professional knowledge and advice right about now because I wont stop till I succeed.

Thanks Again Guys!

Well, your head's in the right place by your latest comments Joel. Agreed, you have to start some place. That said, i don't think RU is a place to begin quoting rates....more likely something along the lines of what you previously stated: "hey, i just graduated Brooks, i'm a DIT...etc....etc..., i'm HUNGRY for work and will gladly quote you an indie favorable rate yadi yadi yah......etc. etc...and go to my web for more info and contact me at: email....etc....

YEP....like others we all started some place working for peanuts or in many cases FREE. but to publicize on a forum such as this will ultimately cause some havoc and may not be or actually is not in good taste. Hey, my rates are $900 a day + equipment....but i NEVER quote them. Will i work for less? yep. and do so for good reasons--NGO's or shoot/causes i believe in. Will I work for more? yep....commercials where my rate usually doubles. Good taste and learning HOW to get across to the consumer is the best medicine here...and WORDS rarely if ever will convey that. Show them your talents on your web or show reel or other...

Joel, if you are really interested in tapping into the benefits that this forum can give you in knowledge, advice, mentoring and experience...I'd suggest that you edit your original post to remove the pricing, and ask for some assistance in how to get to work. Then I think you'd find people here would be a lot more interested in helping you out. Just my .02...

Well yoj stated in your post, you got snaked.... see how it feels being undercut? Its bad foreveryone. You will get work. Just keep at it.it takes 2 years to build a good client base, then another 8 to build a great one. Be choosy who you work with.

Hi Joel.
I think we all agree that as a student stepping into the market out of university your efforts are understandable as we all did so when we finished our degrees but the approach is wrong. You described yourself in your original post as a capable professional yet your pricing and the fact you advertised as such on a public forum such as this beg to differ. I like to think of this as a community of people sharing their knowledge and experience with each other so here are my 2c'.

Read and learn more than what you've done to-date, work for a rental company until you have enough hands on experience and contacts to go out into freelance world then work for peanuts or free. The guy who undercut you on the feature could have been you as it would have been your first as DIT acceptable on indi films by your lack of experience and for purposes of buffing up your CV. After a couple of years of that you will have an extensive enough CV and list of contacts to be able to rely on freelance work for income.

Lastly I'll shed one last piece of advise; owning some hardware dose not make you a pro... think about it.
I look forward to many interesting posts from you mate, good luck.
Nir.

I changed my opening message hopefully not too late, Thank you to all of you for helping me out and getting a better understanding of how the big leagues works, I have a lot to learn, I am confident that I know a lot of the basic applications and responsibilities of a DIT, the really advanced stuff I still need to learn, I teach myself, this is the place I learn the most just reading the bulletin boards, any suggestions where else I can look to learn up besides real work experience, also can anyone recommend a good book on color theory or place to go to learn it.
