  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

District 9 nominated for Cinematography BAFTA

it's good to see that docu-style film making can hang with the most elaborate rig/shots, but I was also more impressed at how well the cg was integrated into the footage, not to take away from the obvious talent behind crew who shot it.

There was nothing about the story I liked at all really. I did not care for the main character, so the story fell flat.

I don't think anyone was supposed to like the main character (Wikus). He was a shit. Jeez, even his wife's father, also his boss, gave him a "promotion" that was the equivalent of a death sentence.

Funny though, my wife hated the movie. She didn't like the main character right from the start and didn't have any interest in the rest of the story.

I thought D9 was pretty good. Definitely a cut above most other minstream Sci-Fi films. On the other hand, the story had it's flaws. The movie didn't quench my thirst for a really good Sci-Fi film.

Star Trek?? It was decent but not the best. I feel like the standard is being lowered under our feet for spectacle.

Star Trek was decent, but it could have been epic if they had focused more on story and simply started the series anew. The whole time travel deal and yawn-inspiring villain were two major strikes against it. I thought the casting and art direction were right on the money. JJ Abrams did good with the overall direction, but the story is where it all suffered. Standards have been pretty low for Sci-Fi films for some time now and it seems most nobody cares. Hollywood prefers the popcorn-munching action films, disguised as Science Fiction, over truly great, or even semi-intelletual, Sci-Fi any day.

Agreed Jeff.

Moon nearly made it, it just lacked something.

I'll agree Star Trek was entertaining and I agree on the casting. However everything else was pretty stock standard for me. The script was an average script, JJ Abrams is highly over-rated IMO as a director, the VFX were very good.

I'll even bring Avatar into this thread. I saw it 4 times. Okay it is very hyped, it however does deliver the goods. The story is a bit limp. The storytelling is also uninspired but I think we all knew it was going to be secondary to the spectacle. The VFX were the main attraction and clearly were the best of 2009 by far! I felt the characters were very believable and they kept me engaged.

Avatar was good but was it worthy of the Golden Globe... hmmm don't know, maybe. For sound, vfx, and other departments yes. I liked the movie though.

D9 was a very entertaining, well put together film... but I dont think it was the best of the year. It did have a good marketing job which helped hype it up a great deal, and it had peter jackson's name on it too. Last year seemed a bit weak overall, minus the big block busters. I thought the Brothers Bloom was better than 75% of the movies released last year. But I tend to expect more out of a story than most. not that i dont enjoy movies like D9 or Star Trek... i loved both! D9 isn't something i would watch over and over though. Either way, I'm glad RED is a part of cinema history.
