I think the Scarlet should go through distribution if its true intent is to be used by the masses and sold on volume.

Albeit Red One users are very patient and understanding, the same cannot be said for soccer mom/dads that they say this camera is to be part of the target market.

Offset and stabilize the expectations of the greater marketplace by going through distribution via pro video equipment vendors like Abel Cine Tech, Great Northern Video, Band Pro, Prosource, and other high end dealers.

Just my 2 cents.

If I am correct, doesn't the Scarlet shoot RAW?

If it does, how are all these soccer parents going to learn how to CC?

Just because you can color correct doesn't mean you have to. You can always use preset color space options, just depends how deep you want to get into the footage. It can be simple or it can be intensive

scarlet shoot true raw files same as redone ...

Maybe not so much soccer moms but this thing is tailor made for "skate dads", quite a few of which already have experience with RAW stills. RED will make a fortune off this camera from the action sports world alone. There are literally tens of thousands of boardsport enthusiasts aspiring to be the next Mack Dawg and we just had the perfect camera designed for us. Some will CC, most won't but still buy it for the size, frame rates, and resolution alone.

Cool trailer wardovision, that dirty ol' Wedge.
Great points as well, I know my Scarlet will be pointing at a whole lotta boards

Can people pleeeeease stop talking about the soccer moms!!
It was just something said to show that it might be possible to use it in such a wide range... it's not targeted for soccer moms that's for sure.

It's a professional tool and that has always been the case... case closed.

also Scarlet is already on thousands of wishlists already. By next year every skate, surf, snow, wake, and bike filmer in the world will be awaiting it's birth. IMO demand the 1st year will exceed what they can sell direct eliminating the need for external distribution for at least a while. Not saying they won't, just that they don't really need to.

not me. I live close by and would rather drive over and pick up 2 then have have them mailed to New York and back. (and want it as cheaply as possible of course)

thanks, I can't wait to have a Scarlet in an SPL for next year's Wedge season.
this isn't your's on the frontpage is it? http://splwaterhousings.com/. I had to get a paper towel for the drool when I saw that. (and wondered how long it is before 4k Chopes footy starts showing up)

Forget about the soccer mom crap. These people won’t pay $3K for the camera and start learning Final Cut or Premiere. There are cheaper cameras and easier workflow for them. This camera is serious stuff and there plenty of people to buy it.

there are 100,000 skateboarders in America alone that already know Final Cut or Premiere. "Soccer moms" is merely a term for a different class of consumer. I believe I would fall into the soccer mom category and I'm proud of it.

The “soccer moms” that know and are willing to learn a more advance process of editing then would fall in the serious amateur category of filmmaking with this camera. I am 100 percent sure that whoever is willing to put the time and money into it can learn to shoot great images.

By the time Scarlet comes out hopefully the workflow with RAW will be more established thanks to the Red One. With the RGB set up it should be easier.

Let me give you an example of why this won't be in the hands of so called "soccer moms".

Digital cameras; DSLR's have the ability to shoot Jpeg or RAW. Most people can afford a DSLR and many people own them. Many so called "soccer moms" own them. NO ONE of these people, at least the ones I've met which are a few, even some who really are professionals, use RAW in their camera, ever.
Reason is that they don't know how to handle it, it's too complex, it takes up too much space on their harddrives etc.

When DSLR's became so cheap that anyone could afford them, people started buying what is actually a professional tool. Almost non of these use RAW if they aren't serious about photography or professionals working with it.
It's a quality that most people don't need to use, it's too much for their needs.

Bottom line, where would a "soccer mom" need 3K? 1080p is as much as a consumer can watch and even if there are 2K TV's on the market by the time Scarlet arrives it's still 3K.

No it won't, just look at the DSLR market.

I am 100 percent sure that whoever is willing to put the time and money into it can learn to shoot great images.
Yes, but that applies to Red One and Epic as well, don't you think?

As said earlier: "soccer moms" is only an expression to talk about how wide it could be used, I don't think for a second that it reflects actual reality.

So please stop talking about "soccer moms"... even the "term" is making me dizzy... it is a professional tool. It's a small step over the prosumer market.

Not for nothing, but I would not want to put my RED in that beast. I've seen way too many housings (with such designs) become mop buckets. Stick with AquaVideo, Gates, ( and others lurking here) etc...guys that have built housings of this magnitude before.

The RAW process in DSLRs is going fine, thank you very much. For those who can learn it. Leaning applies to anything, Red One, Epic, HVX 200, HV20 or whatever. The Scarlet is a professional tool for those who are basically broke, because otherwise you would buy the Red One.
The Scarlet is much like the HVX 200, a great camera at an affordable price giving someone the capabilities of achieving professional looking footage with no guarantee of filmaking superstardom.

People don't care about learning, they want something that goes from "click" to "finished image" in the blink of an eye.
Professionals or serious artists might learn it, but we are talking the general market of "regular people". They could learn, but they won't...

You need to think about it in a realistic way and a great simulation of RAW on the general market is the DSLR market which is cameras that's precisely the same as Scarlet, only in still image form.

General public don't use P2 cards at 1080i and NO TOOL has ever guaranteed "filmmaking superstardom", not even 35mm.
