DisplayPort 1.3 Finalized!

This morning, VESA announced the completed DisplayPort 1.3 spec. It's got full compatibility with HDMI 2.0 thanks to implementation of the new HDCP protocol, which is something we didn't hear about before. Product should be hitting the shelves next year and with GPU makers adding multiple DP sockets (3-6) to their enthusiast and professional boards, the writing is on the wall for a 4K future.

DP 1.3 has enough bandwidth to support 4K 16bit at 96Hz. Or 5K 60Hz.

HDMI 2.0 compatibility was always on the table, but the HDCP 2.2 compliance was up in the air. I'm glad to see they are implementing it in full.

We'll have to wait for Thunderbolt 3 toward the end of next year or early 2016 to see DP 1.3 being rolled into that interface.

Excellent news. I hope the fabs can get the hardware on the street by 2015/Q1.

There is some speculation that Apple will bring TB3 to market sooner than anticipated to support DP 1.3 in TB daisy chains, I hope that's accurate. Sadly, I think Jeff is right that Apple will wait for Broadwell before updating TB, DP or HDMI, but I can hope…

Lots of unanswered questions there.... Sounds interesting though.

I'd really like to see USB, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort and HDMI all converge into one singular interface to rule them all. Give me a system with a dozen 100Gbps ports that I can attach anything I want to those ports -- displays, storage, etc..

No information on cable lengths yet, but I do suspect we'll see some fibre optic choices for professional uses, now that prices are going down. Corning is certainly going to test those waters as they have with their USB and Thunderbolt cables.

Given the flood of new hardware coming in 2015 and 2016 with the generational leap, yes. Everything points to 2016 being the big bang for 4K displays, 4K media, and 4K-capable computers. We'll have new versions of USB, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, SATA, PCIe, and DDR that will be in the next gen workstations, including the Mac Pro, giving them the horsepower and hardware connectivity to chew through 4K like 1080P video. There will also be new interfaces like DisplayLink and DisplayPort/HDMI over USB.
