Hi,

I was wondering if the Scarlet firmware allows for the disabling of dead pixels, replacing them with a median value of nearest neighbors. If so, I was wondering if it might be possible to buy a Scarlet, that failed its sensor test with dead pixels, at a discount. Our videos are for friends and family, and for the foreseeable future, will be delivered as BluRay DVDs. Median-filtered out dead pixels on a 4K sensor will not affect our ability to use the camera. The wife may balk at the price.

All sensors contain a number of dead pixels and engineering firmware maps them out in quality control before leaving the manufacturing plant, in which case they will act just like all the rest of the cameras, making a discount unnecessary. If the number of dead pixels exceeds some predetermined limit, then I would expect RED to swap out the sensor with another and throw the bad one in the trash, again making a discount unnecessary. If RED decided to sell a pile of b-stock with bad sensors, I am absolutely certain that a hue and cry would rise up from these "customers" at the first appearance of a dead pixel on the face of their child scoring their first goal. NOT--GOING--TO--HAPPEN.

When RED left 3k for $3k behind, they decided that soccer moms would no longer be the target for their low end camera, and certainly a professional would not accept a flawed sensor. So, regardless of customer begging, wheedling, and whining, I expect these kinds of requests to go into the trash with the bad sensors.

But, as a consolation, here's a little song to get you through the night:
