  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Directors finder

What cheapish directors finders do you guys like? What should I look for?

A Canon 7D is a nice finder actually for S35 work.

I use the 7D with a 18-135 kit lens as a finder. On shoots where the 7D is on set anyway for whatever reason (don't get on the HDSLR thing please) its effectively free.

There are lots of things I like about using the 7D... first off it can take pictures and video. Second its tiny. Third you can estimate exposure/lighting rather well with it.

Artemis is pretty cool too.

Artemis is what I use. I know it's bad form to bring out a phone on set, but the ability to pick aspect ratio and switch lenses very easily is a huge bonus. Plus being able to pick camera format really helps

Artemis works on the latest iPod Touch too- now that it has a camera.

Also, its increasingly common for tools like the iPhone to be accepted on sets.

Just make sure they are in "airplane" mode anywhere near shooting time... and shut them completely off when pyro is happening.

Why shut them down when pyro is happening? If they're in airplane mode nothing is sending or receiving from the phone, making it effectively off.

Iphones and ipad's are things I'm seeing on set a lot now though, I'll agree with that.

Why shut them down for Pyro?

Simple... cell phone manufacturers are required to keep transmission levels below a certain level for it to qualify as "airplane mode" with the FCC.

That level does allow for spurious transmissions. Since there is in fact power moving through the device you will have some spurious transmissions. So long as these transients are below a certain level, they are OK.

Now the level of transmissions is very low, and is probably safe around pyro.

When lives are potentially on the line, probably isn't anywhere near good enough.

So, in order to guarantee that no spurious emissions will affect the explosives, the detonators, or the remote detonation systems, just turn off ANY radios and leave them unpowered until pyro is clear.

On some shoots you will see wireless audio cleared... but they are very specific about co-ordinating that. If audio can't work within pyro's limits they end up MOS.

I expect this to become more flexible after the industry has time to do more testing. Remember though its about guarantees of safety.

Ah, ok then. Did not know that, thank you.
