  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Digital 2K Bolex shooting RAW, is it violating RED patent?

No, the Adobe DNG format has been around for some time and is open source.

RED, from what I remember, have a patent on a certain type of compressed RAW recording.

Cineform also have a compressed RAW format, that came before REDraw (I think).... so RED don't completely own the concept of compressed RAW either.

Sure not!

EDIT -- LOL Jay, you've already told it, going even further in your explanation than my exclamation post ;-)

What you don't see Bolex or other companies doing is bringing compressed Bayer raw cameras to market. Red's patents for that particular aspect of Redcode may keep the competition away for some time to come.

The Dalsa Origin sent out 4K RAW data and predated the Red One. The Phantom and the SI-2K were contemporary with the Red One and are RAW cameras, and the Alexa, the Sony F65, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, all can send out RAW data and there are external recorders that can compress it. I don't know the exact nature of Red's patent regarding compressed RAW recording in-camera.

Didn't si2k do that as well with cineform?

Yes. And I'm sure someone else recorded compressed bayer pattern RAW before SI/Cineform too. If someone did have a patent on "compressing bayer pattern images"--I sincerely hope it would get overturned in short order. That would be like "I patent the idea of not shooting uncompressed video" which is stupid.
