I realize that it might be speculative at this point, but what would be the differences between at "Still" photo taken with the Epic vs. a Frame Grab of the same subject with the same lighting, f stop, speed-- everything!?

Maybe somebody from RED could answer this?

Thanks and Happy New Year!!

Just guessing but probably none. I'm thinking it's more of a macro of settings, i.e. still mode sets a custom shutter speed, maybe does some photocentric things like activate a flash, etc. etc.

Basically the same things you could do in motion mode but would be a pain to go back and forth changing settings.

Perhaps it will write a standard photo RAW rather than R3D. Stuff like that.

It will not magically open up more resolution, DR etc.

great question. I believe that it will be a tag system where frames are tagged with the magic "still" meta data.

I believe that R3D will be the file format. and in Recinex you will be able to select "just show stills" then bam you will see all the frames that you tagged as stills, then do some color correction etc... export etc... full res etc....

maybe even select all then click the "make timelapse" button and select your speed etc...

maybe they can extend this meta data to the idea of circle takes, GPS info, and maybe a custom field with things like which actors are present in each shot....

cheers!

EPIC has a Still Mode and a Motion Mode... so you can set a high shutter speed and a different ISO for stills if you want, and then flick over to 1/48th sec for motion. It doesn't preclude you from shooting motion and extracting a still. The Still Mode will also offer a higher REDCODE at a lower frame rate if you like.

awesome Jim. Love the ability to quickly get to the film standard 1/48th. I assume you can have different RAW settings for both the stills mode and the movie mode.

What will be the Max frames per sec on the stills mode at full res at full redcode quality?

Jim, what will the longest exposure be in stills mode?

I so love the idea of one camera for all my work. A Scarlet 6x4.5 (or 6x7) with stills frame rates and compressions at the larger frame sizes and motion rates and Redcode 36/42 at S35 frame sizes would be just awesome. Just pecking away at it;-)

While extracting frames fromMotion capture on the R1 are fantastic, and I would expect nothing less with both Epic and Scarlet, been able to shoot Still mode, will bring a much precise and higher control of the shooting environment and precise choices needed for certain looks, speed of moving subjects, particular look, use of flash, High speed sync with Pocket wizards and the like, and much more, now the fact that shooting at "lower frame rates" will give you a higher REDCODE is an other plus, looking forward to start shooting some still work on the Epic.
