  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Difference Between Dovetail & Bolt-On Quick Release Platform

I have the Cartoni Focus HD, and I bought the long dovetail quick release system with the red 18-85. Im getting the long plate so I will have better balancing options. I should just be able to screw it on to the cartoni plate I assume.

So, are you planning on screwing the dovetail plate onto the QR plate that comes with your fluid head?

Was my plan.

Might sound a bit silly, but I thought it would work. Seems like it would.

I basically wanted it just for the balance, because the camera is 5 lbs, and the lens is 11 lbs. Also, i'll have the Redrock Micro Mattebox and the Cinevate Durus FF. Everything 19mm.

I assume it would all work, it's still risky buying everything online without actually getting to mess with it, but if it doesn't work, i'll work something out with it.

I see. Since it appears that this is what people are doing, I suppose I'll do it also. :)

Yea. I saw that you were also looking for a fluid head in another post.

I would recommend the Cartoni Focus HD. 1k head and I have the Manfrotto 536's.

I personally think the Cartoni Focus HD is the best head under the 2.5k budget. Capable of holding 26lbs, very smooth, pretty light and is very very durable. I am in love with mine and ive used many Sachtlers. But, it's all personal preferences. I know many people who don't like Cartoni's.

In the great words of Maurice from Boogie Nights, "Wear what ya dig"

I don't see the list of compatible heads on the product page , just "non-arri".

I am trying to see if the dovetail plates will work with my head.

FYI, the part of an Arri dovetail plate that attaches to a tripod head just has a bunch of 3/8" threaded holes on the bottom for your tripod's quick release plate. So as long as your quick release plate has two 3/8-16 screws that can slide forward and back, the dovetail plate will attach to it. They are made to be used with any modern medium to heavy duty tripod head.

Thanks for clarifying that! :)

Brian, I just got my QR System in and I mounted it onto my Cartoni Focus HD, so if you want me to share some pictures with you, I will if you are still confused.

I feel a little less confused now thanks to the explanations from everyone here on the forum, including you. But, some photos of your QR system would be great! :)
