  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Die, Twitter, die!

I agree Meryem. It seemed to start when this forum was updated. Almost as though it was an attempt to put some distance between RED and its most loyal customers. RED the kid is growing up and is leaving us "Puff the Magic Dragons" behind. The way of the world, I guess.

Guys, you have to understand, it's very difficult
Umm, no. Difficult is trying capture, edit and transmit a compelling report from a war zone. Difficult is leaving your family for a year to shoot a documentary in a rat infested jungle. Difficult is infiltrating an LA gang so you can make an eye-witness account of their activities. Difficult is not uploading a few pics and some well written opinion or observations about new broadcast or filmmaking technology from the World's biggest gear show. Half an hour in Starbucks should be enough...

Yes, Fresh DV has been consistently good over the years.

Reporting from NAB is difficult, especially for those crashing through the show on their own. I also have to tell people who are not here, that the show is pretty "meh..." this year. Some nice announcements from a few vendors, BlackMagic, AJA and Adobe mostly. But all new products coming at a later data and frankly, anyone who pays attention knew about them before the show kicked off.

I go to NAB to see the people I want to see. It's not about the products, well occasionall it is. But mostly not. I did check out the new Canon zooms (FAIL) and the new Angenieux zooms (WIN). Both are expensive and don't fit everyones' needs. The RED announcements were nice. Live set with real tattoo artist doing real ink. Kinda cool in that edgy RED way. The biggest question I have of RED is when can I get my Epic-X and when can I get a fixed-lens Scarlet or two??? No answers. :-(

The products I'm most excited about that I saw here at NAB are:

Promise Thunderbolt RAIDs
AJA Phaser Thunderbolt system for editing I/O
BlackMagic counterpart product that does the same thing...
DaVinci Resolve 8

Everyone has jumped into the compact solid-state recorder market. It's insane... That says to me that the next evolution in cameras, is buy the head and then buy your recording system separately, probably from another maker...

I am really grateful to those who are taking the time to post here, at Redmodz and beyond, as I am unable to go to NAB.

I'm sure it is difficult and I suspect this is part of the problem - with blogs, twitter and facebook we've become increasingly reliant upon those whose first interest is not specifically reportage. I think many companies, users and fans increasingly rely on crowd-sourced information, which may not be of the quality of a well written, planned and executed piece of PR or press journalism. For the completely understandable reason that they are at NAB for themselves and to meet others in the industry.

Not that I dislike getting a 'users'-eye-view' of a product, that's always been great for debunking the hype, but when that becomes the chief means of communication I think we all suffer to a degree. Just because we have the facility to report news, doesn't make us all good news reporters.

Just to be clear - I'm not directing this at RED, I see this happening with other events, E3, GDC for example and in news/journalism in general. It's a real mixed bag in terms of absolute quality of information.

The only remotely NAB-related press-emails I've received so far have been from my Adobe reseller, with Premiere 5.5 and Avid / FCP cross-grade. Autodesk have been pimping the crap out of their 2012 suite of tools prior, where is everyone else?

That is the only thing I feel I am really missing out on by not going to NAB.

Those are what I am also most interested in. My new MacBook Pro is coming tomorrow and I'm dying to try out the Thunderbolt.

I always liked their NAB coverage over the years and this year seems no different.

They don't have any RED at NAB videos up yet but I'm certain they will soon.

Guys, you have to understand, it's very difficult to both look at things at NAB and report on them.

Well, I would not ask anybody to do anything that I myself wouldn't do - and have not done. Last year, we had people--myself included, since I always attend on a press pass -- falling all over themselves to share. Now it's crickets here - just links to some dull twitter page. Last year, there were so many people reporting in here, that I didn't do as much, because there was already a lot of coverage. So I know how this works first-hand. Twitter is killing the forum. Last year, we had a vibrant conversation with a lot of participants. This year...crickets. I would offer my opinion that this dead space also gave more air to the complaining, in the absence of news. It created a different sense of proportion, a lack of enthusiasm.

There's been a couple of things posted, but generally I'm only seeing Twitter bites - which are not very informative and lack an accompanying community conversation -- which translates into (for me) flat and uninteresting reportage.

I can see what you mean, I felt the same way last year and just went with the show instead of posting things. Maybe there's been some loss in reporters due to the bad economy? I don't know, but looking even now there's very few things going on, a little surprising for day two.

I saw Kevin Smith today, he was pretty funny and delved into more on his recent career move, quite elegantly put as well. Jason Mewes appeared out of nowhere and literally stood right next to me for I don't know how long, I tried to get a good picture of him but I flashed him in the face, it's funny only for me but not good enough to post. He crashed Kevin's speech at the end and it was a good spur of excitement for the crowd before they left. That was the highlight of my visit today. Although, I am getting ready to head out to the FCPUG meeting for the Apple announcement, should be interesting.

At Liam - I'm not sure if you're making an uncalled for statement or have a weird sense of humor, but I want to be clear that I never insinuated anything beyond the difficulty of an individual non-reporter person taking up their own time and effort to report from a trade show for the benefit of his online buddies.

I never followed any twitter stuff, I hate that strange codes in it, makes me scary
