  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Did you know...

Was the required lens image circle for Dragon ever officially stated? Would like to know what S35 lenses are going to work or not.

From my view Dragon Upgrade priorities are in order of importance:
0. Ship Date - without the thing in hand then nothing else matters.
1. DR
2. Noise
3. ISO sensitivity
4. High FPS @ high resolution
5. Fast Black Shading - under 5 minutes
6. Color Science for Alexa skin tones and highlight clip
7. Improved Fan Noise
8. Image Circle that allows use of my existing PL lenses
9. Improved battery life from higher efficiency
10. 6K resolution - not sure I need 45% +/- more file size and all that goe$ with

Maybe this will bring back the practice of choosing shots and executing them more carefully, as those shooting film had to do.
I hear you. But post is usually done after editing :-)

What I mean is : 6k will make life harder for small post production companies/projects to handle.
IT will mean : a lot of productions will transcode to 4k (dpx) before color correcting, because 6k R3D won t be playable at 1/4 res without miltiple RR while color correcting. This will harm the beauty of R3D RAW.

I want Dragon! the anticipation is killing me, but then again I will probably have it in 2013- only 20 years ahead of the competition! haha

Can we expect to see a "Stills" mode enabled with Dragon? (besides pulling stills from motion) just curious.

Amazing work Jim, Jarred and everyone at RED!!!!!!!!!

Indeed more stills!

Fantastic, but for stills work the aspect ratio is till too skinny.. for magazine work we are still going to have to give up almost a third of the sensor image :(

4. 6k (6144 x 3160) has more resolution than a Canon 5D MK III.

Jim

Not to be a negative nelly but how do you figure?

5D Mk3 is 22.3 megapixels
Dragon is 19.4 megapixels

Resolution is not only measured by MP's but also by printable Horizontal and Vertical resolution, yet I am not speaking for Jim, as I am uncertain of how He/they have come up with this answer.

Epic DRAGON Max Resolution is 6144 x 3160
6144 x 3160

5D III Max Resolution is 5760 x 3840

If you're shooting 1.85:1 sure Dragon has 0.2 more megapixels but juuuuuuust barely. But if you're shooting anamorphic the 5D would have way more resolution. So it's up to your aspect ratio. Even 16:9 gives 5D a slight edge. (Not that you can use the 5D for shooting 5.7k motion so stills are the only reasonable place to compare the two. But those would probably favor the 5D in even more aspect ratios.)

I do have Nikon D800 that has 7.3K (7360 x 4912), effective pixels 36.3 megapixels @ FF35mm sensor with 14.5 stops of DR.

Incredible!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately it can deliver 1080p video only (line skipping, compression, etc,...) but it beats Alexa in many ways

that Janusz Kamiński, ASC showed us recently with a short film "Broken Night".

If Epic with the new Dragon sensor get pretty close to that kind of image quality, latitude, wide colour gamut and dynamic range I would be very happy...

Take care San... :)

I do agree with Blair, though, that if you cannot make decent images with the Epic, you probably have a problem making decent images whatever you have.
THAT does not mean that other cameras don't have their merit.

Isn't that what everyone said about the DVX100?

Hahahaha

I didn't get the 100.
Bought the 200, though, and it felt like a hoax out the gate, and when I started doing greenscreen on it, I understood why "real" resolution can be of some use in certain situations.
Actually I by far prefer the PD-150 stuff I did, to what I did with the HVX.

Other cameras have their merit, but this thread is mainly here to rejoice the first "real" public images from a dragon. No?

I have a drink for the guys, for sure!

Hope Graeme is staying warm up there in Canada in his mad scientist lair working on his color science...... Everytime I see him he amazes me (and confuses my simple mind)

Stay Rogue Jim... it suits you and us......

D800 beats Alexa??? my iphone 4S beats Red Epic and F65 can you believe that? :o

I know this might sound stupid to some, or maybe it has been discussed before, but has RED ever considered releasing a DSLR/stills-only camera that utilises one of their sensors? With specs like Dragon's sensor, I can't help but feel it would obliterate every DSLR in existence - hit Canon where it really hurts! :gun::cry:

Sadly a lot of people I deal with only care about the look. Everyone wants the Alexa look. better on the skin tone. Yes Sadly!!!!!

Have you ever given the current hype around old russian anamorphics any serious thought?

You lose resolution, detail, and they are far from consistent (usually) and that's exactly why they are such a good fit on a digital sensor.

The added resolution on the reds (yup, even 6k) only adds to that beauty as all that "life" and "organic beauty" really gets to live without moire and other digital artifacts.

But it's not because of tech precission people love these lenses...
