  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Did you know...

Everything gets better, including color science. OLPF gets better. Color gets better. Resolution is up. Dynamic range is off the chart. Obsolescence obsolete. RED. And we still have no idea what we are doing.... just wait until we figure it out.

Jim

No doubt; that's what RED is known for (and why people buy in). I was just referring to current camera/sensor configurations... Specifically Scarlet since that's what I own. 4.5k/Ana would be a nice hold-over until Scarlet-Dragon roll out commences.

Upward, onward!

Your research alone must be worth so much. The time investment, manpower, and brilliant minds you have working with you plus the, pardon the pun, raw information you all have accumulated in 7 years.

Your tools have grown my business, improved my skillset, and given me a new found joy for my job.

Thanks.

see you all at NAB!!!!

Your doing pretty well for a guy that has no idea what hes doing... :)

So the big question here... (and Im sure everyone is waiting for it)

When do we get it. Factoring in your famous always late policy... What do you think is a worse case scenario delivery time for us early birds. :)

Cheers Jim.

1. 6K (new Dragon sensor) is 2.2x 4K in number of pixels.

2. 6K has 45% more pixels than 5K.

3. 6K has over 10x the number of pixels than 1080P.

4. 6k (6144 x 3160) has more resolution than a Canon 5D MK III.

5. Pixels are good. Down-rezzing is good. Dynamic range is good.

6. The cleaner the sensor the more you can compress in REDCODE RAW. Dragon has less than half the noise of Mysterium-X.

7. Obsolescence Obsolete is good.

Just a few facts to chew on.

Jim

Good news, thanks for all the hard work.

Now where is the laser projector so we can see these images on a big screen.

If I'm reading this correctly the hidden message could be this.

Because it compresses better the data hit of going to 6k will not be as bad as you think because you can comfortably capture higher compression without sacrificing picture quality.

Nice.

All the while using less power thus not generating as much heat!

Jim

Camera noise being cut by half is hard to fathom, seeing this in person must be unbelievable

I have tremendous guilt because we are late. That is the main reason for going silent. Having said that... we are finally about to unleashed a bevy of stuff to blow away everyone's expectations.

Jim

Definitely understand that. My current project (accessory for Epic, in fact) is way behind schedule. It's frustrating.

You guys have a history of delivering "worth the wait" stuff, though.

Truly awesome. Mind boggling even. I can't wait to see movies at home like this.

Hi Jim,

This sounds great. More resolution and dynamic range is always a great thing.

One thing I'm slightly concerned about is whether we'll ever see 5K, 4K, 3K, 2K and 1080p full sensor allowing us to shoot higher frame rates or simply lower resolution to save on data without resulting in cropping into the lenses. Is this something that Red are looking at currently as other cameras are starting to provide this option.

Thanks for all your hard work and you really shouldn't put yourselves down saying you don't know what you're doing. The Epic is an incredible bit of engineering. You really should start believing and acting as an industry leader!

Jim has Sleeady said that it will crop. Also, I don't believe an image can remain RAW if there is scaling.

You will kill us in post. 6k argument is a no seller for the producer (for a while), they just got used to the 4k word.

...

Pat

Maybe this will bring back the practice of choosing shots and executing them more carefully, as those shooting film had to do.
