  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Did I shoot myself in the foot?

In November I shot a short film using the RED. I converted my footage to 720P prores files using Red Rushes for editing, mainly for speed as well as versatility since I was possibly going to be working on a couple different machines, some of which didn't have the horsepower of my main machine. Also, at that time I didn't have the latest version of FCP that supported the .r3d's.

So, now I've got my edit, and I would like to try and conform back to my .R3D's so that I can send my project to color for grading.

Is there an efficient way to conform my edit without purchasing additional software such as Crimson?

You could manually assemble a new edit i 1080 or 2K using the 720P as reference, but that would take a little while. The other solution is to use Crimson. If you think about the time savings and lots of less headaches, Crimson's $180 becomes very worth it.

It's a short film, you can go in and manually replace each clip. It's tedious, looking at the beginning and end timecode, but it's an option.

Log and transfer all of your footage, and make sure you name it exactly the same as the files you've been editing with.

Go into your 720p prores timeline, and select all of your footage. Right click and select "reconnect media" and point it at the files you just logged and transferred.

You might have to tweak a couple of the files, but this has worked well for me.

Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for the pointers. I'll try the log and transfer method.

I tried this a couple of days ago:
Edit "offline" files from redrushes
Duplicate FCP sequence
Remove effects, dissolves, time remapping
Export EDL
Open color
Open EDL
In the EDL dialogue point to the folder holding all your R3D's
Grade your R3D's
Render to desired format
Open your original FCP sequence
Reconnect to rendered files from color

It's not described in any papers from RED or Apple and certainly not supported in any way, but it worked for me on a relatively short project.
It needs a bit of tweaking, when going back to FCP and you do need to be careful when removing dissolves. You'll need to extend the clips and such.

Hey Virgil,

Thanks a lot! I'll give that a try. Luckily, there aren't any dissolves in my piece, so hopefully it will be pretty straightforward. I will, however remove the temp title cards and slug. Thanks a lot for the tip!

Export an xml from fcp then use Clipfinder to replace your 720p files, created from redrushes, with the R3D's.

I exported an EDL from FCP and imported that into Color, pointing it to the ,r3d's and it worked perfectly! I just had to boil my edit down to one video track before doing so. Thanks!
