  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Did I miss this? O'Connor O-Focus Mini

Hello Scott,

This was just shown for the first time at Creatasphere 2010 in New York:

http://www.productionhub.com/video/view.aspx?item=6743

The exact pricing has yet to be determined but we would like to come in somewhere around there as a street price. What we do know is:

-Its double sided
-Has adjustable hard stops
-The lowest gear ratio available for short throw still lenses- 1: .75
-With a CFF-1 hand wheel it has the same gear ratio as the CFF-1 for Cine Lenses
-Comes with a LWS bracket but can be adapted to both 15mm/19mm studio rods
-Uses the same star coupling as the CFF-1 and gears can be attached directly to the drive housing

hey Eric, congrats on that vid, very well done! I didnt realize you guys were also getting into baseplates and such. It looks great!

Thanks Shawn for the kind words!

OConnor will have a full accessory program...with complete customer support.

This is just us getting started. More to come...

Best,

Eric, when is the new follow focus expected to hit the street? And is O'connor developing a fluid head below the 1030 series in expectation of slightly smaller camera weight configurations?

Give us a month on the new FF...we are overwhelmed wth the O-Box right now!

What would you like to see for a new head? It could be an OConnor but also a Sachtler as well...specs would be best.

I was very fond of the discontinued Ultimate DV/DVS heads. Have one of each in mint condition, love them.

Also with the O-Box and upcoming FF, do you anticipate significant inventory issues?

Will there be a drive gear with a ratio to allow this to be used with cine lenses in a pinch too?

I don't think so as it would have to be huge (107-plus teeth, some 3.5 inches/88mm in diameter). There are other design particulars which make the "mini" unit not really the choice for cine lenses. It's going to be a great FF (with double-sided capability at that) for users primarily into autofocus still glass with the occasional cine application, but if you're mainly using lenses with cine or similar mechanics, stick with the CFF-1.

Haha! Should've done some maths before posting :)

I have one of these heads as well. I gave Joel Johnson (I think he's head of engineering at OConnor) some ideas for a smaller head a few years ago. Basically I'd like to see two heads:

1) A refresh of the Ultimate DV but much lighter (it weighs 8lbs now) and if possible the same counterbalance crank as the larger heads rather than the dial at the bottom now.

2) A really lightweight mini head around 3-4 lbs (or less if possible) that cost less than $800, has the same fluid drag sector system and the same screwjack infinitely adjustable counterbalance that goes to zero. I understand a lot of a head's mass is needed for stress and rigidity reasons under large counterbalance loads, but maybe this small head would only support around 6-8 lbs max, which should be good enough for stripped down DSLR cameras. The current options for small heads on the market are either still too heavy or don't have the special OConnor counterbalance system.

Sorry for the mini-thread hijack.

Thank you for the feedback....

OConnor is going to kick out the O-Box post haste.

The Mini-Follow Focus is not far behind...

Along with a complete OConnor Accessory System.

My best to you my friends!

Yah Johnny and I just posted about this on another thread. I tried this thing at NAB, it felt super badass -- rock solid, small/light and modular -- making it very compatible with cine and still lenses.

Eric, you said it was supposed to be ready by now, right? Any news?

By end of summer. OConnor had a huge order for some other products so had to shift resources. This will come soon.

Standing on my head right now......sooooon is not good enough....When did you say?
What was a production date?

.....by end of summer i'm hoping i can hold off on a FF & MB system...but not looking likely....faster please. ---and these are good problems you know....
