I've been looking at the DG glidecam that came out a few months ago to replace my ronin. For short takes it's good but the majority of my work is music videos so moving around for 4 minutes is almost impossible with the scarlet + sigma 18-35. He is using the with the epic dragon and 16-35 with no vest and seems to be getting good results. Has anyone used it? or recommend something better? Maybe HD-4000 with X-10 vest? Trying to stay under $1500

I have the DG glidecam and use it with my 1DC + nikon 18mm f2.8. works like a charm. I think it shld work even better with red cameras due to the the camera's shape and weight distribution. The 1DC is quite abit taller.

Ive used the HD-4000 as well (without vest) and I can say the DG glidecam wayy way easyier to operate.

Its easyier to get the balance right on the DG glidecam, less fiddly and very very solid.

You can also adjust the gimbal position at the central column (you cant on the HD-4000) - really quick way to adjust your camera's droptime

tweaking the camera position on the DG glidecam baseplate is also very easy - just two knobs!

Tripod/baseplate is also same with the manfrotto tripod baseplates

Hope this helps

I purchased the DG glidecam a couple of weeks ago and I must admit that it truly is a beauty to work with.
Super fast balancing and the adjustable gimbal position (upside down shooting) is really unique and gives you so much more than with a HD-4000.

But you might need some extra gym time if you're gonna use it without a vest/arm. It still gets pretty heavy when shooting longer takes/all-day shooting.

I bought the Devin Graham with a Glidecam Smooth Shooter vest and it's a great combo. I sold my Ronin and Atlas vest because I hated the constant lag on pan and tilts as I always felt a few beats behind the subject. The DG + Smooth Shooter vest combo is still cheaper than a Ronin.

The DG with Smooth Shooter vest is much easier to hold comfortably and for long takes than Ronin with Atlas vest (you need a vest of some sort with Ronin). Plus, the DG reacts instantly, unlike the Ronin which I grew to hate.

The DG balances so fast and flips to low mode so quickly, and is much better than the previous Glidecam HD4000. The lack of quick low mode is why I switched to Ronin, but that's been solved now.

My DG + Smooth Shooter case is 1/2 the size and weight of the Ronin case which was huge. Plus, now I don't have to worry about the electronics freaking out. There's just way too many "Help, I'm on set and my Ronin stopped working" stories. The Ronin is definitely better for things like shooting from the back of a truck or passing through windows, but for myself, the DG is better on a day to day type use.

I just purchased the DG Steadicam as well and I am in the market for the smooth shooter package. I to have the Ronin and the weight takes a toll on your body when you have a red mounted....and I hit the weights hard 5 days a week.

If you guys know of anyone who needs to get rid of the arm and vest, let me know.

@ Gene Sung. I just purchased the devin graham steadicam. I am trying to determine if I should purchase the X-10 arm and vest or would the smooth shooter arm and vest suffice. I want to kit my dragon with BT Mattebox, 18-35 sigma, and the wooden camera top and bottom plate with a follow focus kit attached.

Your thoughts??

Quinton, have you used the eroz x1? Interesting concept. I'd love to hear how well it works and any drawbacks. Thanks!

We have a x-10 and love it. Let me know if you decide to go that route as we are planning on selling ours as i typically hire ops now with their own rigs.

Jeff,

I have not used it. I'm intrigued by the concept as it allows you to still remain minimalist. Vests and large rigs just don't work for me; but, I would still like to have some reprieve from the weight of larger rigs without sacrifice of the quick configuration changes that the DG allows. I'll post on here if/when I purchase it. In the mean time, I'd love to find a solution for using the jet pack expander with the belt clip and v-lock attached to the base of the DG glide came.

@ Jacob Schwarcz

I sent you an inbox. Get back to me as soon as possible as I need to make some decisions and I do have one other alternative. I already have the devin graham stedicam and all I need is the vest and arm.

Let me know the pricepoint.

Smooth Shoter works really well. I highly recommend it. Compared to my old Ronin + Atlas rig, I can hold it for way longer without being wiped out. I think the weight limit is 11 lbs, so if you are not over that you should be fine.

Ive been the Glidecam guy a lot lately for a sports doc company, and I'm quite happy with it. Ronin is a bit easier to get smooth shots, but a of negatives as well.

Here's a review I did of the Devin Graham Glidecam with a cheap Cowboy Studio vest/arm combo. It's an URSA Mini, but the weight is right up there.

I was just wondering if any folks had experimented further with DG Glidecam, X-10 vest and the Dragon, in my case ?

I have the DG Glidecam, the X-10 vest and the heavier not CF Dragon body. I set it up the other day as light weight as possible on the DG, but without the vest and it was dishearteningly heavy, yikes ! I must now try it with the X-10 vest, as no ways I could run about with it for more than a minute or two. I originally purchased the X-10 with the HD 2000, but have never used it, so now is evidently my chance be it a necessity. I’m using the Small HD 502 monitor as my EVF, so thought I should rather mount this on the foot of the DG instead of the camera to loose and distribute the weight a little. I do not have a touch screen so use the side handle which adds to the camera weight. Any tips or suggestions on this combination and set-up would be most most welcome ?
