  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Denz FDC wow new collimator

Anyone who wishes to check out a NULL Lens can do so at an Abel office in NY, LA or Chicago. I'll be demoing one at IBC and we'll be showing a prototype of the NULL Target with it. The combination of NULL Lens and Target really in't guesswork -- the image pops into clear and obvious focus.

The Null Lens has no moving parts. The NULL Target has no moving parts. They lock together tightly and precisely. They function together in a clear and simple way. They each work on a very simple and defined principle and they do each very effectively.

Hi Jacek,

Okay minimum of guesswork :-)
Making an adjustment for a 4K sensor while viewing a 720P viewing image is the weakest link in the process. The 1:1 debayered image is 'fuzzy' enough to introduce a small degree of uncertainty. For most lenses this isnt a concern but for lenses as sharp at T1.3 as Zeiss Master Primes it does appear to be.

We rent the F35 and PhantomHD as well. How suitable is the Optimator for those cameras? Can it measure offset for shims?

How would I get hold of a Optimator to demo?

Hi Mitch...
Is the target close to ready yet? Part of my reluctance regarding the Null is that, as you pointed out in a previous post, you don't always have a nice brick building 1,000 yards away; nor are you always checking depth on a bright sunny day. The ideal instrument for me is one that is self-contained, precise, and fixed. The Null with a target sounds interesting. If it's ready to ship shortly after IBC I could wait to see it before deciding. The Unique Optics Diascope seems very nice. The Denz seems cool too; I think the use it at CSC. But it's also pricey compared to other options. The Optimator seems like a possibility as well...
But if the target's ready, I'll swing on over to Abel the week after next. It's always fun to geek out with you guys in any event! ;)
Has anyone else reading this thread actually purchased any of these devices?
Cheers,
Harry

Hi John,
I hope you did not take it personally - I'm just sharing my experience here.
The truth is that none of these tools can be used by a someone from the "street" 'Accurate measurements require practice and experience- whether is a lab, machine shop or cine equipment rental house.
The full blown version of Optimator has a micrometer head attached to give you the shim thickness readout.
All versions have neutral mount so with a proper adapter you can measure back focus on any camera, be it c-mount, RED, Genesis or even your Nikon or Canon SLR. It covers full frame, allows to see sensor tilt(and the amount of it), sensor centering and many others aspects of performance.
You can perform most tests that film Cameras were checked for on digital sensors with the Optimator.
Band Pro handles the sales and if you contact Michael Bravin or Nir Reches they will gladly schedule a demo for you. Until production units are ready- currently target is the end of September for shipping- we have the prototypes to show.

I don't know delivery dates for the NULL Target yet and I'm not going to guess. Harry, I'm happy to show you the prototype once I'm back with it from IBC. I'll be back in the office on the 21st. Anyone who comes to IBC is invited to come by the Abel booth to see the prototype. It's pretty small but I just saw the latest render from the designer and the finished version will be really petite. Beautifully engineered -- perhaps earning the REDuser moniker of "badass."

The NULL Lens doesn't require you to be 1000 yards from a subject -- 150 feet is enough to be accurate to within 5 microns.

I stand corrected. ;)
See you on the 21st.
