Does anyone know how a maxed out Dell 5510 with xeon processor and m1000m Quattro would do with 6k Red footage in Premiere and Davinci? Anyone use it?

I would use it on the go but also get an external graphics card solution that works via thunderbolt 3 once they come out (like the razer core)

Please don't tell me I should have a desktop or a mac. :) Just needing advice on a mobile workstation pc

I really really really want the 5510 to work but have a feeling I may need something beefier. The big key for me is the external graphics solution coming out later this year.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I would suggest taking a peak at the video card and processor benchmarks.

Basically the unit is a vary cable HD machine. Just expect to tweak the application settings to squeeze out performance. Light editing with reduced resolutions, managing debayer settings, etc. Complex tasks will expose the limitations of the machine. The mobile Quadro series are on the low end of the performance scale. Thunderbolt should help with thorough put, but count on having a fast raid for smooth playback. Im always concerned about heat buildup in compact units, so I would suggest an extended warranty as Dell is slightly hit or miss on the reliability.

MacBook Pro. If you are attempting to have a laptop for beast mode, I think you have to look at Aorus, Asus, Clevo, or MSI. Asus probably offers the best value ratio of the lot.

How does the MacBook pro do without red rocket? Like playback and export times?

MSI has had this one out for a while. Through a third party reseller you can configure it to have very quick m.2 PCIe hdd (2 slots of up to 512GB each) although it is somewhat expensive. Also can choose to order it with a 4k display.

I'm hoping for a newer model with additional device interfaces although it is pretty up-to-date for the present with Thunderbolt 2.0 and USB 3.0.

Interesting... I just checked the MSI workstation website and it seems they've dropped Thunderbolt altogether on their newer models. But they do have some killer (4) m.2 RAID capabilities.

Interesting. Actually, outside the Mac/Video post community, I'm not quite sure of consumer attitudes toward Thunderbolt. Peripheral solutions are scarce, expensive and implementation is not as ubiquitous as it USB brothern. Implementation seems to vary from vendor to vendor

To put a fine point to your query as I notice you have other open threads that seem to be interconnected.

The most robust mobile system is a mediocre to midrange laptop connected to a Red rocket card. It's simply unreasonable to expect a standalone laptop to outclass a spec'd out workstation, no matter how much coin you drop.

The Rocket solution is here and now. The Rocket will have enough horsepower to transcode a multi camera shoot for daily deliverables.

If the Rocket is not in the budget, purchase the strongest laptop possible. A common approach is to have a secondary desktop machine assigned to overnight renders. But just be aware that whether Windows or Mac, similar hardware will yield a nominal range of result. For some Mac represents ease of and plug and play. For others, Windows offers more customization options.

Obviously there are options, but in the bigger scheme, not that many. Unless your trade is full time post work, don't quibble over hardware that will expire newness in the next 6 months.

Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it. Do you find yourself being able to work without the RED rocket on your MacBook pro when you are out and about? I am not talking about exporting but just throwing together edits and doing mind color editing/correcting

I have an older desktop workstation at home (I work from home) that had 2 xeon 8 core processors and some pretty good gpus but one of the cpus failed and its nearing the end of its life for sure.

The reason I am asking is we just had a baby and I can already tell I will need to go to some coffee shops during the day to get some work done.. with the thought that I will come back and export at home (via external graphics card, red rocket etc)

That's why I want something that can do some editing out and about but with the connectivity for beefier power at home for exporting.
