  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dell 2408WFP is out

I just moved to Vancouver and so I grabbed an cheapo HP w2408h with the hope that it could do triple duty: 1) as the monitor for the little Redcine PC I was putting together 2) a TV since I didn't have one other than my laptop with Windows Media Center and 3) as a cheap field monitor.

Yes, yes and sorta.

Once I adjusted the display with Nvidia's software, it is usable as a computer monitor.

TV is fine.

As a Red field monitor it works... but its "Vivid Color" oversaturates the image and when the input is HDMI the monitor has very few adjustments enabled. Also the up-rez it does from the Red's HDMI 720 is less than optimal... but I don't think that any low end monitor can do a good job.

They have similar specs excepting that claimed gamut - I'd like to look at them side by side to see if the Dell 2408WFP warrants costing 50% more than the HP. You can get the HP for about $475 at NCIX compared to $700 for the Dell... so it is relatively cheap for a 24" LCD.

If someone is looking for low priced field monitor that they know works off the Red's HDMI then this is an option.

The folks over at Abelcine were kind enough to let me hook my RED to a bunch of their monitors. I'm not an expert on this stuff. I'm just trying to figure out what will work for my shoots.

I'd like the DP and camera crew to be able to view a large monitor via HDMI with full image and menus. The Director and the rest of the crew can view the HD-SDI out with the menus cropped off.

I was also hoping to find a monitor that could pump out a more professionally calibrated image/colors than my computer monitor.

(Build 13 v1.8.8)
Here's what happenned:

JVC 24" 1080P JV-DT-V24L1DU
RED(Active Output:HDMI[DVI]) >HDMI to DVI cable > DVI in on monitor = no image. "Out of Range" message.

RED(Active Output:PVW[720p]) >HDMI to DVI cable > DVI in on monitor = image scaled to fit most of the monitor, but menus were not fully visible.

I was really hoping that the JVC 24" monitor would take the RED HDMI out and display the image and complete menus. I was leaning towards this monitor before I tested it. Maybe someone knows how to get this to work with the RED so that we can see the menus?

----------------------------
Sony 24" LCD WUXGA SO-LMD-2450WHD
RED(Active Output:HDMI[DVI] > HDMI to DVI cable > DVI in on monitor = Full image and menus, but the image was totally unstable and constantly flickering. This one didn't have hdmi in.

----------------------------
Sony 20" LCD WSXGA SO-LMD-2050WHD
RED(Active Output:HDMI[DVI] > HDMI cable > HDMI in on monitor = no image.

RED(Active Output:PVW[720p] > HDMI cable > HDMI in on monitor = Image with menus cropped. Filled most of the screen.

---------------------------
Quickly hooked up the Panisonic 17" monitor via HD-SDI. Worked as expected. 720p image filled the screen with menus cropped. I suspect that Panisonic will roll out new monitors with DVI and/or HDMI for NAB ... at least I hope so.

--------------------------
My own computer monitors at home:

Gateway FHD2400 24" 1080P
RED(Active Output:HDMI[DVI]) >HDMI cable > HDMI in on monitor = Full image with menus. Nice to have a big image to look at, however it's hard to match colors with the RED LCD monitor.

RED HD-SDI out > BlackMagic > DVI in =Image is cropped and does not fill the screen. No menu option to scale image to fit the entire screen. Same color issues as HDMI as this isn't a professional production monitor. Haven't had time to check out the Blackmagic settings via USB, but I'll try when I get some time.

------
My older Gateway FPD2185 1650x1050
RED(Active Output:HDMI[DVI]) >HDMI to DVI cable > DVI in = no image.

RED(Active Output:PVW[720p]) >HDMI to DVI cable > DVI in = Image fills the screen with menus cropped.

RED HD-SDI out > BlackMagic > DVI in = Image is cropped. No menu option to scale image to fit the entire screen.
------------------------------

Anyone getting better results with the professional LCDs so that you can get the full image with menus? Or has anyone found a computer monitor that is easy to set up so you get respectable colors.

So I just bumped into the Dell 2408WFP on Dell's website searching for a monitor my wife can use with both a PC laptop and a MacBook Pro. Seems it is plug and play with the Mac which is nice...

I stuck the model number into the search engine here, and voila... a thread!

SO, has anyone tested this with the RED output yet? Curious as it may be a good cheap alternative to the Panasonic 24" field monitor (although not as robust).

Mitch, got any kicking around or tested it yet?

Thanks all,

M

Yep we try it, and it work's fine
HDMI output from R1 to DELL connected with HDMI cabel, and HDMI to DVI both working properly.

In my Final Cut suite I use two Dell 2408WFP monitors with my 8-Core Mac Pro. I really like them. They have a lot of different inputs, contrast ratio is good, they've been very dependable, and the price for them was very good.

No complaints here on the 2408WFP, for what I use them for.
