  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Delkin CompactFlash PRO UDMA 305X 16GB

Delkin seems like a company that would be more legit about living up to advertised speeds. I'd say this is the best red compliant 16gb contender so far and the price is not bad at all. Especially when you compare it to p2.

Buy one. Try it. Only way to know for sure, I guess. :)

For what it's worth, the transfer speeds on the Kingston CF cards have been very consistent as advertised and I've been pleased with them. Unfortunately, their best 8GB card is only 266X, but it's a very nice card and priced very well right now. The Kingston cards work great for shooting 2K, even overcranked at night. Just ask Ketch and Manny.

Yeah, I'm in no rush right now. But the real question is, should you have fewer 16gb cards, or more 8gb cards? What do you trust your footage on?

I'm tempted to use more 8gb cards, just to not put all my eggs (footage) in one basket. Then again, those 128gb SSD thingies are very tempting, too...

I think 16 would be a good size just because most takes are around 1-2 minutes. (average 90 seconds if you pull a number out of your ass.) Which means on a 5min card you lose 30 seconds of extra spaceor about 10%. 30-45 second tail on a 10 minute card is only 5% wasted space.

Then again if you only have one guy capturing data and are on a multi-camera shoot. Bursts of a lot of data with a need for a fast turn around becomes a less efficient.

This should work, right?

Jim explained in several threads that the CF cards that are currently availble in the market are living upto their stated read/write speeds.
He advised us to wait for RED endorsements.

Even if someone comes up with 32gb/64gb CF cards, I am sure that RED makes better cards at better prices. :greedy:

On Manny's RED, at LART we use two of my Sandisk Extreme CF IV ( yeah the ones with 16GB of LART photos still on it ) and they worked just fine.

This cards are rated of speeds up to 45/MBs but in a test I did with RAW files from my 1Ds III I found that it does not reach the 40/MBs download speeds, but it is definetely good in off for me and again it works fine with RED.

Based on the banch mark test of this card I believe that only this IV generation of Sandisk CF will work, none of the prior ones, also the new Lexar 300x and for sure the Delkin 305x will work as well.

Now we know they work, but before putting them on your jobs as the only recording media, I would reconsidered and for sure trust RED and patiently let time go till RED endorses higher GB cards.

I have not tested a 16GB card yet that is fast enough for 4k or 2k high speed.
I've tested a few but none have passed. Ratings on cards don't mean anything as sometimes they're only for reads and sometimes they weren't tested properly.

$399 is the price on the manufacturer's website, so we will probably see it in the $300-325 range at retail/online - cheaper than 2 Red 8Gs

Does 'minimum sustained transfer' speed only usually refer to the read speed?

Look, the label is even oriented so it will be right-side up in a Red! http://www.dimagemaker.com/artthumb/1150_300.jpg

We tested the Delkin 16GB today and it is too slow. Bummer. This is the problem we are having. It looks good on paper but doesn't measure up to its spec.

Anyone need a 16GB card for their DSLR?

Jim

Sold Jim,

I was going to test one my self on my 1Ds III.

We are waiting just as bad as you guys are... keeping an eye on the market for new products that come to the surface. The biggest problem is that alot of manufactures are very ambitious in their claims, in fact 90% of everything test is way below the manufactures specs.

You'll be the first to know when we get good news. :)

Couldn't they be took to the cleaners for 'truth in advertising' on something as testable as speed metrics?

No because they can surely do it. Just not in sporadic bursts in non sequential blocks. I've seen many CF cards achieve well in excess of their ratings in specific conditions.

Hey Jim, Jarred, any updates on the ExpressCard 34 module for RED? Transcend is now shipping 32GB EC34 media that claims over 50MB/s write times. I don't know if it will truly sustain that rate or the minimum needed for RED, but these EC 32GB modules are under $500.

Well, thanks for testing. At least nobody else has to go out and try them.

Beginning to understand why it is taking RED so long to come up with their 16GB card.
