  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

'Delete Last Clip' using REDmote idea - who wants this?

It would be possible to put 'Del L Clip A' and 'Del L Clip B' buttons on the REDmote.

To delete the last clip, you'd need to navigate to the 'Del L Clip A', click it and THEN navigate to the 'Del L Clip B' button and click it within 10 seconds.

This way, you could put the optional buttons on separate menu pages, if you were truly paranoid about deleting a clip by accident.

This is certainly no more dangerous than tapping on the LCD SSD indicator, and having to choose between eject and format (two very different functions from the same dialog).

BTW - for me, not having the ability to delete a bad take is causing an unnecessary headache in clip management - and a waste of valuable SSD and RAID space, as well as wasted time in transferring the bad clips from the SSD and reviewing them.

i'd rather it not be limited to the redmote... i still don't know why we can't delete stuff.

I believe I read in another thread once that some large movie users were afraid of even the possibility of deleting a clip - that it was all politics.

This would be totally optional (you'd have to add the buttons to the REDmote), and could isolate them on different screens if you wanted.

But, I'm certainly in agreement with you, the functionality should also be available on the camera itself.

There could be a setting for 'allow delete option' that would hide it by default in the LCD menus?

But with the REDmote, at least for me, I'm working a good deal away from the camera, so ... the ability to delete the last clip should be paired with the ability to record a clip. No one will be forced to add those buttons to the interface from the optional buttons.

Personally, I'd rather it was a single button, as I'd delete the last clip quite often - and I'd hope that a single button option would also be available.

If you're old enough to vote, die for your country, buy a gun or drive - you're old enough to delete the last clip!!!

It's got very little to do with accidentally deleting a clip.

It's that the card is written in sectors, chunk by chunk, until it is full. This means the camera is never asked to the camera is never asked to go back and asked to go back and never asked to go asked to never asked to rewind and start over.

That last sentence? That's how the camera would be writing to its cards if it were able to delete clips. Re-writing over sectors that still have data on them. This increases the chance of error. And then if anything happens to the card, it would make recovery far more difficult.

As far as I know, Alexa, Ikonoskop, (F65?), none of the digital cinema cameras have delete clip functionality. Neither does film. I understand certain applications involve many takes and only a few good ones--sports, wildlife, etc--but there's no way around it. Sure, perhaps build 4 would change this, but I'd rather it doesn't. Me I'm just happy that I can keep only the clips I want from the magazine, once they're safely offloaded.

I've written BIOS I/0 drivers for computers. The RED camera is really a powerful computer that happens to record video.

It's probably as simple as changing the next available sector position back to where it was before the last clip was recorded. Storing the previous 'end of data' position should be very simple.

Actually, it's even simpler. The SSD is FAT32. There's a directory structure. It's as simple to delete a clip from the camera as you could delete a clip by hand when connected thru USB3. Try that and see if you lose any other data.

The camera would probably have to update some other files, how many clips it's stored, log info, but ... it could store a backup of these and simply restore the backup of the log file and the data values.

Trust me on this - it's not rocket science to delete a file from FAT32.

Many users here run their C: drive or their Mac laptop off of an SSD - and files get deleted all the time with nary an effect.

Most of the real work is done by the SSD controller chip. It maps out bad sectors, handles all sorts of decisions about which cell to write to next (as it rotates the cells so that they don't wear out).

This is 100% do-able, I'm very certain of this!

As for your comments on the competition ... it's certainly my hope that RED will exceed the competition in every way. Be first with 5K, 6K, ability to delete the last clip, etc. etc.
