Hello!
I'm trying to edit some red footage on a Premiere instaled on a toshiba notebook, a qosmio x505 with 8gb ram. All the footage is located on a esata raid0 external case.
Now it all loads up ok, I can even play in a 1/4 quality which is amazing for me, but the thing is that when I press the space bar to start playing, it always takes like one or two seconds to start. It's nothing terrible at all, but it gets a bit annoying, and I was wondering if there were some kind of trick to solve this or help increase the speed. Maybe 2gb of new ram could help that matter?

Thanks for your time!!!

I have this on a 2009 Mac Pro with 16gb and RED Rocket in Premier Pro - R3Ds play fine in full quality but there's always that little second or so delay before it will start playing. I don't think more RAM would solve this for you - I've seen this behaviour on quite a few machines and assumed it's just normal operation buffering the file before playback.

Thanks Emyr...! I've had an importante improvement in the performance dividing the long sequence in three parts... That seemed to help a lot. It's a good start.

Regards!

I think its the time it takes to buffer upcoming frames.. like the buffering bar in RCX..
in RCX buffering starts when paused, in difference, premiere seems to start buffering when you press play..
well this not a real scientific explanation, hope I'm thinking right..

Well... there was a very strange solution to this: reinstall premiere cs5 and avoid the updates... After that the notebook is working a lot better, even surprisingly good!

I really don't know what could be wrong...
