  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DEEP ATOM down under

Yeah the Ruby's are well build, tested well when we got M8 at Steve's Ranch, and we might also end up getting a Match pair for 3D work with the new Atom MB... ;)

Look forward to your tests Pedro... ;)

completed the initial 3D tests on the rig today.........Wow........full article to come on that.

Water test tomorrow in the pool.

Picked up the housing from ET today for the RED ONE.

They made me a special FLAT PORT......and I also have they usual DOME port.

I will test tommorow

-Dry no port
-Dry FLAT port
-Dry Dome

then underwater (pool)

-Flat
-Dome

I will post full res. scren grabs from each for comparision.

Then on SUNDAY i will head out to Catalina Island and it's famous kelp forests.

I will shot the same chart in SALT water at same distance of course......flat and dome.

Then I will gather some REAL WORLD footage of some fish....corals....kelp forest....and put that up on vimeo for all to see and judge for them selves.

All I can say is that Everyone at Element technica today was VERY impressed with the Rubies.....

I test regular "standard" mirror

and also new "large mirror"

BIG THANKS to TONACI for allowing me to use his EPIC cameras for a few hours today to test the lenses on the ATOM.

TONS and TONS of INFO coming soon.....lots of pictures and full res image grabs.

Time to sleep.

Pedro,

It would be great if you could get corner resolution for both flat port and the dome at fully open aperture and at f/8. These port change optical performance based on f/stop. The dome performs better stopped down where the flat port performs better fully open.

Also interesting test is corner resolution as a function of lens to subject distance. With flat port it should be unaffected but with dome, the image plane curvature is stronger for short distances. As underwater your subject to lens distance is limited by water transparency, it would be good to have distance tests performed for 30cm, 1m and 3m distances.

Lastly, corner resolution as a function of the angle of view. I expect dramatic loss of corner resolution and contrast for angles greater than 60 degrees for a flat port and 90 degrees for a dome. It would be interesting to see the Rubby at 14mm. If you had wider lenses, like Tokina 11-16 or Arri Zeiss 8R, at the extreme wide angle. Extreme wide ange is most useful underwater as it allows reduction of subject to camera distance reducing the amount of water you are shooting through and therefore avoiding contrast and colour loss. The contrast loss is because of small particles suspended in the water and colour loss is because water is a filter of red spectrum.

It is a lot of testing, Pedro, but if you can do all the above and compare to above water shots, I think it would be extremely useful for all readers.

I look forward to your results.

Wish I would of read this earlier....

still....No tlike I had to much choice anyway. I had no ND's I had to go 100iso and everything in the pool today was shot at f8

I had resolution charts on each corner of my large chart.

I also panned side to side (the angles changed) and up and down.

I think I got enough within reason.....also I was all by myself and it was alot to do....

in any case, I'm all packed up for Catalina tomorrow....luckily I have a 1st AC friend that is joining be to help me schlep all the gear to casino point and help me with the tests.

unfortunately I cannot take my big chart with me on the boat plus all the gear so I'm taking the smaller resolution chart and I'll just do what I can with that in the open water.

like I said....so far so good.....

more importantly I'm having FUN!

looong day in the sun.....

beautiful day.....lots of garibaldi's, 1 really big fish and a manta ray....big thanks to crackerjack 1st AC E. Gunnar Mortensen for helping me out and getting me a cold beer on the way back.

3 dives.....lots of heavy gear to drag around.....now I have a ton of footage to go thru, sort and export.

:thumbup:Hey Pedro get yourself a Megalodon rebreather and you can just stay down all day and come up feeling wonderful

:thumbup:Hey Pedro get yourself a Megalodon rebreather and you can just stay down all day and come up feeling wonderful

hahahah.......yeah sure....I'll just add that to the long list of things I need buy.....(not to mention I need get certified in re-breathers ASAP)

How much is one? send me a link to some info....for now I'm loving my halcyon bp/w BC I purchased recently...

I can only do so much, I'm only one person!

I start prep on a feature this week and we start shooting next monday.....6 day weeks and 4 weeks of night shooting (horror movie) so I barely had time to look at any of the footage today.

I am very optimistic from the little I have seen.

I have enlisted the help of James LaViola.....Quantel pablo colorist and 3D post specialist.

He will help me sort thru the footage and pick the best examples for evaluation.

Also he will attempt to correct the distortion in the image from the flat port.....so really the major thing I need to evaluate is not distortion but "softness" around the outer edges....lets see how it is...

A good rebreather like the ISC Megalodon will cost you around 15K to get everything you need. You can actually do 5-8 hour dives and feel great when you come up. Very productive when shooting underwater. You usually run out of batteries before you run out of gas or scrubber. There are many brands on the market but I recommend the Meg. How did those Ruby lenses work out?

Ah....Ross, to open THAT can of worms....?!?!....I dove Meg for a few years and a GREAT RB it is...but also tried Mk.15.5--too big and lumpy for me, but probably best for long duration; then Optima--i won't say much about that one, and then prism, and finally an itilian job--can't recall the name....in the end, i went with small, light weight and the LEAST amount of setup time---that was in the end the rEvo. Setup and breakdown are so much unlike most RB's....and what i see that turn people off from RB diving. Another one to check out. But after multiple RB's, that's what i've been on for 3 years now and never looked back.

Hey Johnny
I to trained on the Mark 15.5 (SM1600) then I got an Evo (to much plastic for me) My Cave Meg is easy to set up, robust with shearwater plumbed into head. I use a Drager panorama nova full face mask which gives me loads of bailout options. I would personally find the scrubber rotation a bit annoying on the revo and I found them to be too delicate seeing someone unpack their brand new revo with a trashed frame from transport. But CCR is the only way to dive open circuit is for the birds

Ross....bit off topic, but all of these are rather mission oriented. Meg for me was too much setup/breakdown---open head to turn on/off; but a badass cannon for sure. I like the small revo rig because it packs easily; lightweight and easy to swim with...plus like rear counterlungs. Indeed different strokes. And CC has its advantages for sure.

what the hell? that was weird:

The excitement is tangible and is building fast in Australia. Loads of producers showing strong early interest in the Deep Atom project and the release of the extraordinary Epic cameras. This is an amazing evolution in the history of film making and imaging. The synergy of Red Digital Cinema Company, Element Technica and Gates underwater housings have created a dream machine which shall produce fabulous things into the future. I am proud to be apart of this and applaud the team at Red, ET and Gates for making this possible....

+1 ^^
Now all we need is someone to make the BATAVIA movie..:emote_hanged:

Hi Vince
I filmed Tiger sharks for Nat Geo TV off the Abrolhos Islands and I know what a challenge that would surely be. Rat Island is perhaps the most unforgiving place and my thoughts go back to the survivors who had to suffer there.

would have been a nice job with Nat. Geo..I used to work the back decks of a few charter boats operating at the Abrohlos and decky for a few game boats and cray fishermen as well, One of the finest places on earth.....when it aint windy. The Batavia was actually wrecked on morning reef sth of Beacon Island, Rat island is sth of there...heres an ol dodgy vid I made : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfrzS0W5PgA
As for Tigers, Ningaloo reef or Dongara get the BIG mofo's
