Friends and colleagues on REDUSER. The time has come to purchase, and I sincerely seek your advice, based on your experience.

Should I buy a good used MX with a 90 day warranty or spend the extra $5K and get the full warranty on a new? The question revolves around having an extra $5K for extras versus having a new camera.

In other words from your experience with the camera's reliability and quirks what would be your advice? I will be using the camera only myself on commercial production projects and a feature film we begin on this winter.

Thanks for your input. I am excited about getting my camera and shooting with it.

2,5 years. Severely beating at times. No issues with the body.
I'd have taken those 5k any day
(But I won't stand liable for the advice...)

Just an added thought... when RED does the MX upgrade they go through the camera and give it a once over, so the cam should be expected to perform as advertised. And it seems with many electronics devices failures happen early on. Much like they say if a person gets past their sixties alive, their expectations for living past the average are very good.

I would not buy just on the fact that Epic is around the corner and you will not be able to upgrade. I say save your money for epic and keep renting till then

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I'm going to email Ketch

haha yes, if there was anyone to buy an MX in great condition, it would be Mr. Rossi.
As for Epic being around the corner? You could probably get into one of the earlier stages by buying a red from Ketch. The sensor upgrade and the future ssd option for the red one has definitely kept the camera more than relevant I would say.

I say buy new... nothing can beat the smell and the experience of unwrapping... plus the sense of debt encurred can do wonders for motivation.
