  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Well, since it is the increased bit depth, dynamic range, and reduced compression of the Monstro that everyone is craving, I honestly can't see them selling too many of the Epic-X packages. What? You're getting a better camera maybe six months earlier than the real Epic everyone really wants: MONSTRO.

Or, perhaps, I'm missing something. The real deal looks like the $4500 chip upgrade for RED One.

Stephen

But that's the Mysterium X upgrade for $4500. If it's the Monstro, then you upgrade by applying the 17.5k credit to the monstro brain only. That's another 17.5k, I believe.

But, IF, there are new specs that pushes the Mysterium X into Monstro specs, then, yes, the real deal is the $4500 chip upgrade for the Red One. Or consider paying an additional $5500 to get the new modular body as well! Tempting, huh?!

I'm trying to figure out this quote JIM:

"Additionally, our RED engineering team came up with a radical new approach to overcoming some of the previous system limitations. Given all these factors, we were able to re-write the system specs, to the benefit of our customers."

If I am reading this correctly, and I fully understand that I might not be, then are the "previous system limitations" mentioned limitations of the RED ONE, or are they limitations of previous system specs announced two weeks ago.

If they are RED ONE "previous system limitations" I have these questions:

Why would one choose to upgrade the sensor in the RED ONE?

With a sensor upgrade wouldn't the guts of the RED need to be modified with complete re-write of the system specs?

For a $4500 sensor upgrade, would you get 100fps on a RED ONE?

I think it's great the way RED is moving forward with new designs and I can't wait to see the pricing of the "special Package". Since the brain is 28K and everything else is free it looks like it might be only 10.5K to get into a fully functioning EPIC.

That is sweet. A real testament to your customer loyalty.

David

There is no Monstro s35 sensor though, so you aren't missing anything if you go for EPIC X. The Monstro sensors are FF35, 945, and 617.

EPIC X allows RED ONE owners to move to the Mysterium X S35 while also getting into the new system.

Or you can of course upgrade your sensor for $4500. We still don't know what the EPIC X will cost though.

EDIT unless of course I spoke too soon and there will be a new s35mm monstro sensor...

hey jason.. are you reading Doctor (my sincere respect) Pruitt ?.. this enlightened no virtual brain should be elected as highest red1 customer rep instead the usual ass kissers lower comission.

Yeah. . . I honestly don't see what's special about the Epic-X except for the cool new look. Perhaps the specs will be spellbinding, but right now, it has no attraction to me at all. I want Monstro-sized dynamic range. . . I'll upgrade our two RED Ones until we can do the trade in to Monstro-based Epics.

I am still hoping that they'll release a SS35 Monstro. That, however, does not seem to be in the cards, so we'll have to "make do" with the FF35 (which holds like next to zero appeal to us).

I think he is suggesting that Scarlet will not have any limitations. Higher frame rates, timelapse, ramping and format options (5k, 4k, 3k, 2k), which was not an option before b/c of the smaller body. Hence...breakthrough.

Stephen,

If the EPIC X specs are indeed that of the S35 Epic brain, then you are getting quite a bit more than a new look. Don't forget about Redcode 225 AND not to mention 100fps at 5k....

Hi there, Craig. . .

True, the Epic-X will have less compression, but I'm not convinced that's going to be a real benefit for quite some time. We are having trouble recording our 4K images now. What makes us think that they will have the ability to store REDCode 225 images on CF cards and drives right out of the box?

True, we'll get higher frame rates, but how often do you use rates higher than 24fps anyway? We shot a whole feature and used the higher rates on one (and I mean just one) shot! I can't imagine our next film using any higher frame rates. . . unless we're trying to set "the film look" aside altogether.

Nope. I'm not convinced yet. I certainly can be. But I just don't see it yet.

I was not sure and I did not want to guess. Hopefully this'll get cleared up. I do not want to speculate.

Fair enough :) Obviosuly going for the sensor upgrades for both your pups is the right move for you like you said. I mean, you'd still have the same problems with storage with a Monstro Sensor.

Jim, is there a time limit on these trade/upgrade options for current RedOne owners? Like, could someone trade in a RedOne a few years down the road or does it have to be done next year?

Limited edition EPIC X sure looks sexy. I'll probably still hold out for the EPIC FF35 myself though. I guess it all boils down to upgrade costs and whatnot.

According to Jim's 7 upgrade options for RED One owners, it looks like if we upgrade to the Mysterium X chip, we are still eligible for the EPIC trade-in at a later date. That could be a nice interim solution too. Lots of decisions here, good thing we still have several months to sort it all out.

Doctor.. you are putting this thing on the wheels.. a few of boys here and others not so young shoot too quick.. we all want that red may succeed.. but at what price?.. we should think first.. for your information.. Mr Jannard is a business man.. didn't you all notice yet ?!!

is it a bad thing?.. surely not !

but.. cruel or not.. he's not your daddy.. you should be yours.. your children's.. wife mistress' and on and on..

Well, that's intriguing, Jon. . .

:-)

I guess I'm just a Show-Me sort of guy. After all, although I live in Kansas, I work in Missouri.

:-)

It's true that I'd have the same storage issues with the Monstro as I would with the Mysterium-X, but at least I'd have more dynamic range with Monstro. We really had struggles with the range in our feature from time to time . . . trying to shoot indoors and still get meaningful data outside. I'd love for those limitations to be reduced by three stops. I don't care much about the higher frame rates just now. But as soon as they start making films at 48fps or 60fps or 120, then I'll care.

LOOK! I got this much correct! Thanks!

David

Something is not clear to me:

I understand that there is an upgrade path to trade in for an Epic X, but will current RED One owners be able to purchase an EPIC X (with the free CF module, I/O module, battery module, but without the $17.5K discount) and keep their RED ONE if they want? This was not on Jim's option list, but seems consistent with the spirit of the offer. So can someone clarify?

It would seem odd if those who want to keep their RED ONEs do not have access to the 1st EPICs shipped.

Thanks,
Phil
