  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I don't think he meant the same "stop", but maybe he did if he was saying that the firmware allows Red One to record 11 stops instead of 10 stops, for example.

Yeah that's the part I'm confused about. It wouldn't have anything to do with f/stops then.... I guess he's talking about dynamic range?

But this new Epic-X is just a Mysterium-X chip, right? If we want to move up to Monstro, we'll have to buy a whole new brain. Or did I miss something here?

Right. Epic-X is the limited edition SS35 with the Mysterium X sensor. To upgrade after that, buy a new brain.

at last it comes someone w/ no virtual brains

Where did you read this?

There was a post months back about a new firmware upgrade with an additional stop or two. It may have been one of the very first upgrades, I can't remember.

I'm pretty sure a "stop", when discussing sensors/imagers, is analogous to dynamic range.. no? But I'm not sure how going from 10 stops to 11 stops, or even 12 stops affects the DR. Is that analogous to bits?

I think if the specs improve, the tone on the forum will be very different then the last time.

I can't see any Red One owner whining.
do not throw out presumptions too early.. :gun:

$4500 can be or cannot be an acceptable price..

if it can be it's only because THERE HAVE BEEN red1 customers whining over here.. w/out them the fanboys would destroy the basis of support in a couple of pages..

we should all be grateful to the whiners.. instead starting to kiss the boss's ass before the time..

Mr Jannard (your jim.. my dearest goodness :innocent:) is monitoring you all.. when i'm dating i never say i want sex before having it.. didn't your first time teach you ??!

The "bits" are the limitation, and for this given purpose it is analogous. You can get RAW 12-stop DR with a 12-bit sensor, but it doesn't mean that 12-bit sensor actually reaches the 12-stop DR... :usd:

Yes, stops in this context is dynamic range.

Well, since it is the increased bit depth, dynamic range, and reduced compression of the Monstro that everyone is craving, I honestly can't see them selling too many of the Epic-X packages. What? You're getting a better camera maybe six months earlier than the real Epic everyone really wants: MONSTRO.

Or, perhaps, I'm missing something. The real deal looks like the $4500 chip upgrade for RED One.

Just when I didn't think it could get any better... RED keeps raising the bar. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the new announcements!

you are kinda odd, but that's cool

Not everyone whined or kissed ass.

Many users give useful feedback and opinions in a mature, constructive manner. I'm sure Jim listens to them.

I don't think "the squeeky wheel gets the oil" is the case.

Epic X is definitely generous... it does seem like Monstro is the super model at the prom though. Two reasons: resolution, and dynamic range. Of those, dynamic range is probably the more enticing to most people... we can barely deal with a 4K workflow as it is. Maybe some of the announcements yet to come will bring some news with regard to dynamic range on the Mysterium X?

The only thing that will "wow" me is a more solidified release date that is sooner than anticipated.
