  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Now that the RedOne is actually available for immediate delivery I see no reason for anyone to get too concerned about the exact shipping schedule of the new rigs. Just because there will be something better sometime next year does not make the RedOne suddenly suck. The RedOne has strengths and weaknesses like every other imaging system on the planet. The new offerings will dramatically improve some aspects and I could not be more geeked up to get mine, BUT, I would rather RED take another month or two and get as many things right as possible. Just my 2 cents.

The R1 is an amazing camera today. I can easily and happily wait over a year for the new upgrades. I'm still diving into the Red pool, having owned the camera for almost a year now.

R1 has a 12 bit sensor but it doesn't give you 12 stops DR, does it?
You have to take the noise floor into account, and other factor that ensure that almost always theoretical results are better than empirical ones.

If you need 14+ stops, get a 16bit sensor :).

BTW how many stops DR does the 14bit genesis provide?

But then again there are further post-processing technologies and techniques that do enhance the DR, such as de-bayering 4K image into 2K one... :)

Epic X looks like a done deal for me!

Except that with digital your DR takes a considerable hit when you apply film-like curves to it. So you lose some DR trying to emulate the sort of highlight roll-off that film has built in to it.

So I doubt even the Monstro sensor is quite there yet. But they're certainly getting close.

Red One has been close enough. So Monstro will definitely be "it" for me.

If the sensor can do all that I'm used to in film with capturing all of the color and value range that I see with my eye and then some like the wide range of film can, then I wouldn't worry about obsolesence at all anymore.

I can use that kind of camera for a very, very, very long time.

In fact, the digital sensor would seem superior in that aspect to film because I used to have to buy different stocks depending on what I wanted to capture... higher ISO for more values in the darks or lower ISO for more subtle colors and range, etc. etc. But with a digital sensor, it seems you can get it all in one sensor.

We already have this! :usd:

That is precisely what I meant... :)

Basically if You de-bayer 4K RAW into 2K 16-bit TIFF - You can (providing You have nailed the exposure) exceed the 12-stop limitation of the sensor...

For me also, although it's tempting to stay up and catch the announcements live, especially since I'm not looking forward to sorting through 150 pages of 'we love you Jim' posts tomorrow morning.
Enjoy the fun guy's & gals.
Tom

We love you, Jim!

...and any hint of what else you have?:innocent:

A lot of exciting things :w00t: but you'll have to wait a bit longer I'm afraid.... sorry! :waaa:

You know... something dawned on me right now.

I wonder if the "breakthrough" improvements takes the SS35 Mysterium X sensor to where Monstro is and therefore takes Monstro "To infinity... and beyond!"

That would truly render obsolesence obsolete. A Red One owner could finally step into true film quality (how can you complain beyond this?) and not ever have to worry with the new modular body too.
