To reward those who took the plunge and bought a RED One. I think there are people out there who heard the RED One trade in offer for the Epic, BUT didn't want to invest in the RED One right away because they were waiting on Epic specs. Let's face it, you can trade your RED One in, but did you know if you needed what Epic has to offer? For a long time, we only knew you could trade it in for full value, but you didn't know what you would get in return. Now you have some idea, but as Jim has stated, the specs are likely to change again. If Scarlet can do many of the things that the RED One can do (or that you need), why would you buy a RED One now, and then pay for a Scarlet? The trade-in offer still stands, but it's not an incentive. Those people who already committed to RED should be rewarded with the EPIC-X offer.

It doesn't bother me personally (since we are getting ours delivered this week), but what You are saying is no fair against all those who could not afford to buy Red One and were forced to rent it instead. I would guess that was majority of the Red Ones sold were not for a private DP use, but rather for rental. If if wasn't for all those who rented the cameras - far fewer would have been sold... I have been renting the camera for really long time and only now manage to put together enough money with my partners to buy one for ourselves. Does that make me (and many others like us) "less committed"?

Does anybody I have an idea what the difference in image quality would be with a difference between 12bit vs 16bit and 11 stops vs 13 stops?

If it's a drastic difference, then image quality is what's most important... to me. So the monstro sensor is the thing to get.

Which means Scarlett FF35 or Epic FF35. I hope we'll get some image tests and more on the limitations of Scarlett (other then fps) before my number comes up.

Wouldn't it be nice if Jim was like .... so yeah one more thing ... the first Scarlet and Epic brains deliver 2nd quarter '09...

I'll never make it to 4th quarter :(

what is going on????? From Jannard's posts, it seems like theres gonna be a change up to the RED line, but I can't find any info on changed other than the new RED Epic-X and the upgrade paths. Are the more announcements to come?

1. Keep your RED ONE and shoot great images. Get continual free firmware upgrades.

Do you think firmware upgrades will eventually cost? Seems like it for Red Own owners who upgrade.

Yes, new specs are going to be announced. That's how I'm interpreting it anyway.

Take the time you need

Take the time you need

Now that the RedOne is actually available for immediate delivery I see no reason for anyone to get too concerned about the exact shipping schedule of the new rigs. Just because there will be something better sometime next year does not make the RedOne suddenly suck. The RedOne has strengths and weaknesses like every other imaging system on the planet. The new offerings will dramatically improve some aspects and I could not be more geeked up to get mine, BUT, I would rather RED take another month or two and get as many things right as possible. Just my 2 cents.

I would say no. They haven't yet, and Jim just said that they will continue to be free.

Most company's don't even offer firmware upgrades, for $4 or for free. My guess is that they keep it free...

Thanxs JAMIN!

This is such Great News feels like new blood has been pumped into everything all of a sudden...Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

Absolutly Brilliant move guys.

DogDay.

No. Continual signifies an on-going upgrade path. The only thing RED charges for is hardware upgrades.

I hope so, but it's one of those awesome "benefits" that I wondered how long could Jim keep a development staff and not charge for some sort of membership program or upgrade cost.
