  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DEC 10 LENS SHOOTOUT

Uniqoptics just now quoted me a $32,000 set prices, which is all 6 lenses, and a backlog of 12 months. So it could be a bit more but about that, if you can wait 12 months.

Thanks for the heads up- I'll update my notes accordingly. :) For $32,000, they are less appealing to me ... at $20,000 they are a no brainer IMO.

My mistake- I didn't see any donuts with the lenses, and wasn't aware that you got any with you O-box. What did you get and how are you liking them?

It was one from my redrock mb, it just sort of flaps over the rear, not elegant, but it does the job of blocking all the light

Except no one is talking about those terrible delrin rings that arent even properly manufactured on the Uniqs. They were wrecking focus pulls on an Arri FF! Total deal killer if you can't actually pull focus smoothly on an Arri FF (same FF that handled all the other lenses without a hitch)

Perhaps it is close, but isn't the same pitch? The only thing I can think of besides being a terrible shame.

Unlikely, but explore these options in the arri spare parts dept... http://www.arri-shop.de:1080/catalog/jsp/arrilogins/DocKatKam/start_vert1_en.jsp
(I can't seem to link to specific parts, so it's in mechanical accessories > FF> etc. Look at the different gears for the FF-4.

Maybe it's a pitch issue or a diameter/number of teeth thing. Maybe a larger diameter ring fits better....Who knows. I've always wondered when those other arri FF gears were to be used, maybe this is it? Slim chance, I concur. Just throwing it out there.

Cool- I didn't know you still had those. If it works, no shame in that. :)

Hahahaha! oh! website zing. I only laugh cause I was so put off I actually wrote them a letter of kind advice. (which is when I got the pricing)

As I sit on this, I almost feel like I have to like something OTHER than the Uniqoptics Signature Series set, because they are so far from available. Anyone have any insight into Uniqoptics as a company? Meaning, why are they so far in back order, why is their site so broken, yet they have so many orders the $ should be a problem...

... no one spin that into a RED comment, lol.

RE: UNIQUE OPTICS LENS

Ryan,
The lens are worth $32,000 competitively speaking. Actually worth much more.

The company was involved with some legal stuff and chose to play it cool for now until the matter is resolved. That appears to be why the lens
are not available right now. Unfortunately for everyone, one year is a long time to wait.

The Leica's especially the wider ones, seemed to have a zoom effect / image shift during the rack focus. That was on the Canon mount?

^ unless I am mistaken, it sounds like you are noticing the breathing, and they do it because they are photography lenses. Photography lens designs do not often take breathing into considerations because it does not show up in a photograph.

The only lenses i've ever seen that dont breathe at all are the Xenars.

Everything else, even Master primes breathe a little.

Really on the MPs? I only have had the pleasure once, and I don't remember any breathing. :/

I assume if Xenars don't breath at all, they must have not the best close focus. I'll hve to look it up. Usually you have one or the other or a little of both.

wonder how they do it in the design

Ok, I'm a semi-idiot on this one.

I asked this because usually cinema lenses, like Zeiss, use floating elements to be able to get close focus... but that can cause breathing... thus the dual design for the MP's... but after I noticed that the Xenars actually have pretty good close focus, I remembered that they also telescope in design. That is how they are able to counter the breathing. Hence they don't need a special internal design such as MP's.

That really seems to explain it all.
