  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DEC 10 LENS SHOOTOUT

Just a totally incidental question. The Leica Rs front element lengthens as you rotate. So what mattebox solution works with that? Some sort of flexible ring? Cheers
we use the Shoot35.com swingaway mattebox for this. it is perfect for this use. i used for our Leica R set's a heliopan 77 mm step up ring - they have all the strange Leica filtersizes - in combination with a Shoot35 77mm attachment ring, it fits perfectly in the back of this leightweight mattebox. With a canon 7 D it vignettes only for 14mm lenses. i received this week also my Canon Epic mount, so i will test if the 16mm Leica R will vignette on 5K. more to follow.

here some photo's of the setup with the 50mm summilux Leica-R on the Canon mount.

If anyone else wants to scrub to a different set rather quickly on station 1 these are the benchmarks:

Set 1: 01:05
(around 3 min)
Set 2: 04:07
(around 4 min)
Set 3: 08:10
(around 3 min)
Set 4: 12:04
(around 4 min)
Set 5: 16:01
(around 3.5 min)
Set 6: 19:26
(around 3 min)
Set 7: 22:47
(around 5 min)

BTW, should we assume Lens set #1 from station one is the same as lens set #1 from station two? Or do we not get to know?

The numbers keep iterating. So setup one has lens set labels 1-7, #2 has 8-14 and #3 has 15-21. After revealed you will learn which sets are the same. For instance, it might be that lens sets 2, 8 and 19 are the same (i dont know, I just made that up as an example). Make sense? The same 7 lens sets were tested in each of the 3 setups

Correct- the numbers do not relate to anything other then just to say, this is a set of lenses and give people a way of tracking their notes if they make them. I didn't want to confuse the issue by repeating numbers, nor give people an extra way to extrapolate out which set goes with the others in the test. It makes it a little more confusing to track, but hopefully it allows people to just watch the images and evaluate from there without being influenced by name brands. :)

Okay! Here we go:

Highlight the invisible text below if you'd like to see my guesses. Please don't if you want to not be influenced by my educated guesses.

Station One:
1) Cooke Panchro/i's
2) Luma Tech Illuminas
3) Leica R's
4) Red Pro Primes
5) Schneider Cine Xenons
6) Unique Optics Signature Series
7) CP.1's and CP.2's
Station Two: Who Knows! That is damn near impossible to tell.

Station Three: This was much harder.
15. Xenars
16.RPP's
17. CP's
18. Leica R's
19. Unique Optics
20. Illumina's
21. Cookies

how where the files encoded?

R3D's output to 1080p ProRes4x4 via RedRocket. Edit in Premiere, delivered to Vimeo via MP4 set at the highest settings Vimeo recommends. R3D's will be available for download for critical viewing in a week when the video has been replaced. Vimeo was chosen as the highest quality way to deliver video to as many people as possible, on as many platforms as possible, without killing our individual servers. :)

Where can we post our thoughts and guesses? Should I wait?

Can I put it in invisible ink like this --> Test. Test. Test. <- (highlight it)

Post them where ever, and when ever you want. Either this thread, or on the video itself. When I replace the videos, I'll let everyone know what the correct answers are as well. :)

I'd love to see people post which sets they like and don't like from each setup before the names are revealed, so you know you aren't biased by brand or name.
