  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DEC 10 LENS SHOOTOUT

Glad to hear a set of Leica Rs made the test.
Didn't see them on the list.
Really looking forward to the results.

Fun times! Really enjoyable test, cant wait to see results

Hats off to Tim Whitcomb for organizing such a useful "real world" test and to those who furnished their valuable gear. Many people donated precious time and skills to the event. I especially felt for the patient human models who posed for long hours. Like everyone I'm looking forward to seeing the compiled results.

Here's a little teaser photo of the one existing prototype Illumina 135mm T1.8 which was graciously loaned by Luma Tech Inc. for the day. Production of the lens is slated to begin during the 1st quarter of 2012.

All the Best,

All the Best,

How much does that bad boy weigh, Charles?

Was a fantastic time and what a great group of people. I am grateful we could host the event, but the real thanks go to Paul Nordin and Fred Salaf, the latter who even donated $ to the event so the Illuminas could make it, THANKS FRED!. Thanks to Christopher Barrett who flew his family in for the weekend and brought the Panchros, to Illya Friedman who flew up from LA with Schneide Xenars and to Matthew Duclos, who graciously showed up with the delicious Leica R glass (and a collimator to keep everything fair). To paul engstrom who got stuck at the border, but still arranged for Tim Zarraonandia to ship us the Uniq Optics.

I think the best part of this was that its a DISINTERESTED PARTIES TEST... in that no lens manufacturers were here, just a bunch of guys passionate about putting these lenses thru the paces. And the one thing for certain is they all had strengths and weaknesses - as all lenses do. I could see some being turned off by huge flares, where others like me, imagined the story telling possibilities of a car approaching in a dramatic scene. GOOD STUFF! The side by side results posted blind are going to be interesting!

The exterior tests actually had the LEAST variance as color temperature in our perpetual grey sky never exceed 50 degrees Kelvin < (1%)

Here is a group photo of most of the participants...

SOunds awesome Tim! When do you think you will have things up? A couple days? Weeks?

Darn, I didn't know this was happening in Portland. I have all the canon L primes and 200 1.8
Would have liked to see how they compare with the big boys.
Thanks,
Tim

Here is a little BTS teaser... Jarred will love this one... Shawn Nelson on camera admitting his lens bias during exterior testing -

:You have no idea Roberto... they all are sleepers really, in their own ways. I would definitely hire some for one film, and other sets for another project. depends on what you are looking for. A fun departure from spot on Zeiss glass... all are reasonably sharp, resolve 5K beautifully and none sucked. If i could, I'd own them all.

my money is on EPIC 5K @ RC3 + Leica - R Duclos Mod = definitely gonna make Sanjin scream with delight:ihih:

Tim,

probably you can beat me with Epic but also I hope that my upcoming Scarlet -X with a mix set of best Leica R+M lenses would get a certain gain...

the leicas will look good taped to my iPhone - but yes, Scarlet has same sensor and will LOVE the Leica R + M lenses. You are gonna LOVE this test.. trust me.

Just a totally incidental question. The Leica Rs front element lengthens as you rotate. So what mattebox solution works with that? Some sort of flexible ring? Cheers

Hey guys. DP Ryan Walter's is working TIRELESSLY to complete the following

1. He is currently uploading the first batch of BLIND VIDEOS of each Lens under (4) Test Environments. about 18 hours more uploads as we are doing HIGHEST QUALITY VIMEOS - so probably tomorrow evening PST. Wed Dec 14th.

* Then after ONE WEEK... we will reveal the RESULTS of which lens is which. Until then, people can pick and choose the lenses they like with no brand bias.

2. All 3 TEST EPIC's PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY
A. in a hot empty room where our former color suite undergoes renovation, while shooting flares and faces in the dark
B. shooting all day on the stage with lens after lens - rapid fire loaded and put thru its paces on a challenging "Stage"
C On a very frosty/foggy rooftop shooting skin tones and exterior cityscape. Perfect "silk in the sky lighting"

All 3 crews worked vigorously to keep the cameras in the same position for every lens comparison test. I was amazed at how simple yet effective these tests will be for people to analyze the lens real world characteristics.

3. Ryan will also be posting the R3D's for everyone to download, process, pixel-peek, grade, etc... to your hearts desires... then... AFTER 1 Week of BLIND ANALYSIS - THE LENS RESULTS WILL BE POSTED ALONG WITH RYAN WALTERS BLOG - whilst all who participated will debate their faves and blog their preferences.

My favorite part was 2 guys arguing about the same lens one why they didn't like it and another why they did. They are all pretty good. Im telling you. It's a shame GRIMM took all the Ultraprimes the day before our shoot. But I don't want to say anything more until people have the week for their own BLIND comparisons.
