  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Debayer engines are not all the same.

It will be interesting to see if the release of the RED Rocket™™™, which presumably will take the time element out of the equation, might change the landscape.

Most probably if it's true what the little birdie whispered - that it's DVS behind it all. That's then assuming that RED Science and RED Rocket is probably a collaboration between them and RED and they're clever guys.

Native

In my opinion, on the XCU of the eye, nothing beats native. How did you acquire the native image without running it through any software?

I think I may have addressed this when I made the original post, however I numbered the files from what I perceived as best to least best. In this case, "Native" is the process in which Apple enables you to pass through the file by writing a (non-R3D dependent) .mov to your disk without transcoding to ProRes. What's more important is that the reason I put Native at the end of the chain is because it actually looks the worst. It is hard to see in these little thumbnails, but the Native processing is actually very soft and there is a sharpening filter automatically applied to the image. So on high frequency shots (like the eye ball) the sharpening actually makes the image look better on a tiny, high frequency pic as you see here. However if you were to evaluate this with the entire image, the file is completely unusable for anything other than offline, as the sharpening is all fabricated.

Again, I encourage everyone to do their own tests and evaluate the results themselves. But in the case of Native, if you dig a little deeper you'll notice that the image is not nearly as clean as it appears in this small section. Perhaps when I do the new batch of tests I'll include a link to a larger site that shows full scale images as well as the small cut-outs.

I did some Test recently in regards of a feature project with theatrical release, and these are my personal results.

Color 1.5 is fast but weak, i don´t have any choice besides full/half and quarter debayer setting, no OLPF Compensation, Detail, NR which results in quite dull and soft 4K dpx files giving away detail, works fine for HD but not for big screen.

Red Alert with all OLPF and Detail settings on pushes the threshold a bit to far for me, i might have to try altering the settings a bit, but clearly better then Color 1.5

Favorite tool is RedCine, Detail High, No Sharpening and NR ON brings for me the best results, you can vote for your self with the attached test images and extracts of details of final rendered 4k dpx files.

Don´t have acess to a Baselight or Speedgrade right now but should be able to run the same clip through speedgrade next week.

Ah Ha! In your personal experience, would you recommend avoiding sharpening filters, even in controlled applications, such as those in Color/After Effects altogether? I often end up finishing in Color and, as you know, it is rather soft even with the new updates.

I couldn't agree more. We did our original rushes for Avid using RedRushes at DNxHD 175x and then later re-did them in Redcine 3.1.8 at the same settings.

What a world of difference!

The Redcine files were so much sharper and had far less banding than what was made with Redrushes.
