  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dear mr Jannard can we please see some footage?

While there have been some setbacks that explain the delays, there also was a working prototype (lizard cam) so I was hoping the Red would have shot some teaser footage to keep us interested. I am not pushing for a premature release , hell, Red can release it next summer if they want I was just hoping that the upcoming Red Day would feature some footage to make the wait easier.

Now I love Red and will always stick by their products but the wait is killing a lot of people. I have not gone the DSLR route but a lot of people i know have, dropping a great deal of coin to make the cameras functional as production tools. When I asked them why, they simply said that the Scarlet seemed like a no end in sight product. I told them they were wrong naturally.

Take your time Red. The results speak for themselves. Just don't forget about the the crazy fans who check this sight religiously multiple times a day, not that i'm one of them :embarassed: hoping for updates to get them through an otherwise dull and meaningless existence. JK

Gavin... we have been very open in our approach. We think it, we say it. We have also been open about our inability to hit time targets because we have never done this stuff before. We have made a lot of changes from our open dialog with the community, which has also caused delays. But if we get pushed too hard that this process is not good, we are also open thinking enough to change it.

Jim

Yeah don't mistake my comments as criticism, I'm just eager to hear more updates. You're so open that silence starts brewing concerns that things are stalled or on a back-burner.

The original schedule put Monstro about 6-8 months or so past M-X. That would mean we could still see Monstro cameras this year but I'm assuming the lack of Monstro footage implies that it's no longer being developed as closely in tandem. If it's 12 months out then I'll probably wait. If it's 24 months out then I'll probably just grab a M-X camera for the interim.

However I'm sure we'll know more before you start taking M-X DSMC orders.

Well, now with the Red One you've already did it before.

The "never done this before" that Jannard is referring to is both the fact that despite RED's revolutionizing of the motion camera market, the company is still quite young, and more importantly the Scarlet and Epic systems are breaking ground in ways that neither their competitors nor RED themselves (with the RED ONE you cited) have ever done before. Technology this advanced doesn't just pop out biannually like you'd expect it would from a megacorporation that plays on the safe side like Canon. RED is on their own, pioneering—and that takes the courage of a true innovator; especially when they've got some of their customers breathing down their necks for release dates.

The way I've seen things operating around here, by flipping the corporate structure upside down: top executives and engineers willing to hear what little 'ol me has to say—the cameras will have been made by us just as much as it was made by them. And with that paradigm, whatever comes out of RED's gates will be worth the wait.

Should we start a trend and scrap the term "footage"?

Sure...and If we do that, it would make just as much practical sense to also scrap the anachronistic term "filming" when referencing the use of digital motion cameras :)
