Hi All,

What is the appropriate method for dealing with r3d files that create DNxHD files that are larger than 4GBs? I am working with Redcine to create 1080/24p DNxHD on the PC, and have two clips that create files that are too big for quicktime. I have found that if I create 3 instances (with different names) of the clip in Redcine and trim the export correctly that I can get 3 files that span the r3d. I am not sure that this won't cause problems when I get ready to conform. I would really prefer to have the r3d represented as 1 clip in Avid as well. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Ken Miller

Hi Ken, have you already started cutting. If not, I would create the clips using MetaFuze, even with spanned clips, MetaFuze will create a single clip in an ALE file. In your case, since MetaFuze doesn't care about the filesize, your .R3D doesn't need to be segmented first. The only issues in MetaFuze are lack of audio support and batch functions. These will be implemented very soon, as well as faster transcoding. When you get to Online, you simply send the file to DS via AFE. Most of your offline effects will translate including keyframes.

Thanks, Forrest. I do need the audio from the r3d for these clips, so if I use Metafuze I will need some way to get at the audio and then relink it to the video.

Back to RedRushes for the Audio. Luckily, Media Composer has the "AutoSynch" feature. Put the Vid and Audio in the same bin and AutoSynch them. The projects I've been doing, have all had audio recorded separately, so I've not had the chance to test the RedRushes method yet. Hopefully over the weekend.

Actually, now I think of it, you've already created QT with Audio in RedCine. If you use MetaCheater to create an ALE and modify your clips to capture audio only, then potentially, you could resynch the audio from RedCine to the MetaFuze video. Don't know if this would work, but worth investigating.
