  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci Resolve V7.0 Supports Rocket

Bye the way, I'm hoping that DaVinci would work on this.

I had a little thought about how people might be choosing to shoot with RED because 4K RAW can be graded in realtime with DaVinci and a RED ROCKET. Am I optimistic?

I just had a hell of time conforming proxy edited FCP timeline to Apple Color (because it was shot with build 20 cam and trying to grade with FLUT science environment that requires the older proxies to be regenerated). So can I dream and look forward to the environment without such issues? ;).

Red-post-gone-wrong probably has hurt the camera in the marketplace somewhat, and the more good post solutions exist, the more comfortable clients will be shooting Red. On the other hand, I think a lot of Red post nightmares are a consequence of clients trying to save money by doing things themselves or having the owner/operator they rented from or the editor they happen to be using (who's probably not a Red post expert) handle aspects of post for them. The availability of Resolve for the Mac is unlikely to make those sorts of situations go away.

As far as workflow annoyances, there will undoubtably be some. There always are. But I expect a major improvement over the status quo, which these days for us involves involves a labyrinthine mix of working with R3D, ProRes and DPX files across Final Cut, Color, After Effects and RedCine-X with help from Clipfinder and a bunch of custom in-house Ruby scripts (for XML slinging).

Now THERE's something we can agree on!

Right, not easy, but it will make my job easier, I hope, because not being able to playback during grading is my main shame to our clients.

Yes, exactly. Real-time playback at 1080p/2K in a fully-fledged grading environment (i.e. not just primary-only corrections) is the key element missing in all current Red post solutions under ~$50K. And Resolve for Mac looks like it will plug that hole perfectly.

Just finished some tests - Resolve on MacPro with Rocket, 3840x2160 r3d, premium debayer @ half res, primary and secondaries grades with resizing etc - also have per clip r3d decode ctl; 10 minutes of source material renders to ProRes4444 in HD - under 13 minutes. Cool.

Peter,

Thank you for the update. That is a great news. Even cutting the rendering time is a great improvement. Have you done any test result for realtime function? Or does it ever support realtime playback?

Sure, the real time playback and grade is no problem. Mac or Linux. Working now to make renders real time too.

Peter, does Davinci going to have direct access to all of the R3D metadata from the system itself ?

Peter, how much of GPU power does DaVinci use? How much do you think the ATI graphic chip on current Mac Book Pro can handle (along with the presence of RR)?

It has to to support the RED ROCKET because RR only handles R3D.

None. DaVinci requires CUDA. It's the technology made by nVidia, thus only found in GeForce and Quadro GPUs.

Hm, then getting PC notebook with CUDA would be better to combine with RR for the on location DIT set then.

I have has both a 9400M and a 9600M GT with 512MB.

Same here on my 17" Unibody, with SSD and will get the Mobile Rocket for it too.

Just looking to lock down specs on ideal Mac Pro system configuration, and see what the nest options are for the Control surfaces.

30k will not be spent at this time on the Coloring system, at list I don't think so for now, I would prefer to have an extra Epic-X, but still like to see what options are there besides the Wave.

Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design desperately with a certain reason wanted to get DaVinci Resolve on a Mac

and now some people wants to put all on PC laptop (Windows) that sounds pretty funny for me...

Somebody is wrong here.

Of course you can have DaVinci Resolve on Linux with PC laptop but that's totally another story...

Sanjin,

You well know the frustration of the Apple's whereabout nowadays.

PC laptops are way too appealing even to Mac users.

Since we'd be using RR, then older Mac Book Pro should work, too, thanks fro reminding. I have 17" and 15", but the problem with 15" would be the resolution.
