  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Davinci Resolve Dongle Nightmare....

How do you feel about a dongle to protect software? do you think it is any more or less effective, is it easier for you as a user not to have to use and manage dongles? i know you use a fair bit of software yourself.

Personally, I don't have a problem with dongles. In fact, I like them in some cases because they allow me to easily and legally move my license key between machines when necessary. Avid was dongle-only for years, and when they went cross platform and improved their performance on laptops it made it very easy to take advantage of that, because the dongles, like the software, were cross platform. In fact, in the rather large company I currently work for, we wish they had stayed that way because quite frankly, it's a pain in the neck to re-authorize specific computers when IT security forces us to isolate our internal network, cutting off Internet access for those machines. Fortunately, we have a long standing relationship with Avid and have been able to get some dongles to circumvent that problem. But for anyone working in a large installation that must have network security (the MPAA and the studios force us to do that), dongles are a very good thing. As are license servers.

On a personal level, I like the fact that a dongle allows me to run the same software, with the same license, on a workstation and a laptop without regard for Internet connectivity on either.

Just want to update everyone on the outcome of this thread. Blackmagic refused point blank to help me out. However the wonderful people at jigsaw24 did help me out and did me a discount on new Davinci software and dongle. So big up to jigsaw24. I also did the Davinci training coarse that they setup which was well worth doing. Blackmagic, well I have spent thousands of pounds on their gear over the years, and I really think they need to have a look at their attitude towards customers.

Soooo many times iwe'va had our smokes stop working due to some license/upgrade clusterfuck. DAYS DOWN, and no one at autodesk being able to help. Its unfortunate that the guys who have it cracked can keep on working while the people who bought it have to deal with the LIC issues.... oh well....

So true....apparently it would have been so easy for me to get an illegal version, even though I already own a licence. However, I believe in paying for the software I use.
