  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci RESOLVE + Control Surface Coming to Rome, but I need your help... ;)

Hi guys,even so the KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS have not yet been gifted a new home, we are working on our first Motion Picture shot on EPIC "RAPE of a BEAUTY"
which will be filmed in Rome, in pre-production now, and to insure that our dailies and our series of MINI TRAILERS, get the full treatment as the finished Film,
we are extremely excited to report that the DaVinci RESOLVE with full Control surface its coming to Rome Italy, my new Home... ;)

What I do like to hear is what are the best solutions as far as monitors, we got 3 Apple 27" Thunderbolt Cinema Displays,
and what Tower configuration is best suited for taking full advantage of RESOLVE, please do keep in mind 3D... ;)

EDIT:

What I also meant is the needs to have the best set up in Hardware Computing Power to run 5k real time even in 3D, like Mac Pro with what in what slot + Cubix or not etc.

We'll have MAXX DIGITAL's EVO 6G 24TB 8 Bay RAID 6 towers for storage.

I wish I was Petri but I am not, just spending what little money I have, wisely on whats important for my work, it serves little to no good to have the world's best camera, EPIC, and then fail it in Post, especially the color grading part which to my images has always been a key part, so I'm getting the best I can afford even so I still work from my home/office... Imagine when I get the studios up and running... ;)
 
Ketch, I wish I was there in Rome to help you film. I visited Italy last September and fell in love with the place. I'll have to try and persuade one of my clients to film there. You are extremely fortunate to live in such a beautiful country and be able to film it on a such a great camera.

I have found much more powerful, and freedom of choice in the cards.

You'll need a good reference monitor that is affordable. It should run off the Davinci
through SDI. It's the new Panasonic 300U monitor. It has preset HD standards right out of the box.
It will beat your Apple monitors. They can never be calibrated for the broadcast world to the same degree
or accuracy. So use the Panasonic 42" 300U as your main monitor. With SDI option about $4200.

and yes Italy has always been my beloved, and not only because its my home, but because I have traveled the world and continue to do so and there is on other place like it, and ROME?

What can I say, so much History on every corner of this city... WOW!!

Thanks on the monitor Luigi, I'll check it out.

Absolutely no on Windows, have been on Mac for the past 20 years and not going back..., if there is a reason to go Linux,
and by that I mean a very good one, then I'll might consider it just for Da Vinci Resolve station, if not I'll stay with Mac... ;)

Yes David indeed I do, but I'm not looking for affordable, I'm looking for the best and most importantly the most accurate Monitor for color grading, were calibration will be spot on,
as with Apple monitors I already know I can never get them to be were they need to be, already been true this with past photography jobs.

The Apple Monitors will be for the workflow, not for grading, plus I'll need a reference monitor for the clients a 55 or 60" should be good, till I get the 4K monitor delivered.

I'll check out the Panny, thanks for the suggestion.
 
I doubt it is even possible for any Apple PC to do 3D 5K R3D natively in real-time. Quadro 4000 is the fastest GPU available for OS X and it is really a very slow GPU. Considering 3D and 4K, the limit of 3 GPUs could be a showstopper. A single GTX 580 3GB on Linux or Windows would offer as much power as any Resolve on Mac ever could - and you can have 16 of those. You would also need 2 x Rockets (or 4 for HDRx) with 3D. The Mac Pro is starved off PCIe bandwidth anyway and even with a GPU Xpander and the 3 GPU limit starved of PCIe slots. So, it has to be Linux or Windows - don't think there's an option. The Mac Pro wasn't designed for graphical workloads.
 
If there is no real option for MAC PRO, then I might have to consider the Linux platform, but definitely not windows, at list not unless I am really put with my back against the wall... ;)

There is also a possibility that "RAPE of a BEAUTY" might be done in 2D, so if this happens then at first, will be a 2D Grading station.
 
The linux option is available only if you're using the Resolve Surface, and since you're using it it's the best option if you don't like Windows (like me :P)

I don't want to say something wrong, but I red somewhere that you can "link" multiple Linux workstation with specific cards to scale your system how much you need. It's a great deal!

Consider that Resolve GUI works in only one monitor. You can use the second one for the scopes, and maybe a 27" is a waste of resolution (because built-in scopes aren't really hi-res)... or fine if you're using Ultrascope on another computer linked to this monitor ;)

I'm in Rome too; glad to know that there is another Resolve Surface here ;)
 
If you want no hold's bare, I'd check out the new BVM series, from Sony. the 25 inch OLED panel, properly calibrated will give you better than CRT as your critical grade monitor. and for clients nothing screams top of the line than getting a projector set up like a barco or christie. and getting them all calibrated to match each other is key.

also will you be running PC, Linux, or OSX? Linux version won't be able to write pro res if that's gonna be one of the primary outputs, you'll need a mac system on the side if you want to go linux to connect to the database via network and just do quicktime pro res outputs from there. I'd totally go with Linux and not have such a low cap on GPU's, or go Windows, and pop in a whole bunch of gtx 580 video cards. IMMENSE amount of power for the price you are paying. it has the same amount of cuda cores as the TOP quadro cards right now.

Linux and Windows do have more power possibilities at a lesser cost then a Mac tower, but they also would be the only self standing units in my all system as everything is OSX,
so I'll still tend to shy away form it us much as possible, but I'll try and see if I can fid some one that has a system already up to go visit and check out theyr workflow on in it and see
what it really offers vs a OSX set up.

We have linux version with 2K panels and mac version with JLCooper as assist station, ultra-scope, and waiting for new Sony OLED, now on TVLogic XWM and Pioneer Kuro 50". If you choose linux, you are future proof for 4K and 3D and preserve that workstation for Resolve exclusively, which is good idea if you plan to make money.

going OSX, def get yourself a cyclone or cubix, and get flashed gtx 470's. again they offer just as much power as some of the top end quadro cards. you'll see some really good performance.

The 470s are in the top CUDA cards that you can use on OSX, but aren't powerful as 580 or 590 on PC/Linux...
Remember also that in OSX there is the 4GPU limit...

I think that the best solution is build a Linux machine for the hard work, and if you still prefer the Mac workflow, you have to have your actual Mac Pro in the room, switch the dongle to it and do what you need to do ;)

Rome is were Cinema world is at, so was a driven choice and thanks for the support, and yes I can write fast,
have done so many revisions of the various Scripts I have I can't remember how many... ;)

But no, the Script for "RAPE of a BEAUTY" its not done, will be finalized and re-written with the participation of the main
Cast as to insert their personality and story with a more organic fill to it, this is my approach to writing this type of stories and I believe it
will bring better results and integration of the actual Actor/Actress personality in to the Character.

Thanks agin to every one participating here, much appreciated, but the more I see this option the more I wish to remain with MAC, so I hope to configure a good solid station.
