  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

David Fincher turns to Kickstarter for next project ‘The Goon.’

Well, it shouldn't be a secret that the director doesn't make a whole lot of money from the films they work on. Unless a deal has been put in place for a cut of the gross or even royalties on video/TV/web then they'll get their fee and maybe some awards if the film is well received and that's it. A lot of money can be made by also having writing and/or producing credits on top of being the director, but that would require them to have writing talent along with the ability to switch hats which is many times difficult in a practical sense. Now, if you're a famous director then you can charge a much larger fee and, being famous, could always do the film for less or even free depending on the project.

Also, you have to consider the reality of the project. David Fincher may have $400K+ somewhere but you have to ask yourself, if you had $400K would you put that into a film or would you put that into a college fund for your kid(s) or into savings for retirement? How long would it have taken to build up that $400K in the first place and how much work would it be to make it back should the film fail at the box office or end up going nowhere? It's easy to use your own money for something but at the end of the day you're the one who has to face paying the bill or washing the dishes.

This isn't about Fincher not having the money to put in the project. It's about proving to studios that there is an audience willing to pay to see the film.
