  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Data verification software for copying off CF/REDDrive/etc.

if it's free there'll have to be some sort of 'chip in for a crate of champagne fund'...

I would gladly pay Mark for sophisticated software of this type. ;)
Can we get Anders' app?
Cheers,
Harry

I like you Harry. To bad more people don't think like you. It never ceases to amaze me - how ever since the internet took off - everyone wants everything for free. And I am always blown away buy the number of "professionals" who make their living on bootlegged software. All the motion graphics artists who make a living on After Effects - and don't even own a legit license. I don't get it. I think it is pathetic. You want a professional tool and support and updates - but you don't want to pay for it? Anyway, thanks Harry.

This is music to my ears.

How has everyone been catalogging their footage? I haven't started shooting yet, but will be very soon (a feature). Right now my hard drive is littered with tests and random fun shoots. Its all in one folder and I have just been opening each r3d folder and clicking on proxies to figure out what each file is before I open it up in RedCine. Which is definitely not the best way to do this, I've just been busy and the real work hasn't started yet so I'm still kind of messing around.

What has everyone been doing to keep the digimags organized on their computers? You aren't supposed to change any of the folder or filenames right? I was thinking of just making new folders with the names of each scene or test and then inside there would be the folders and files from the digimags that you aren't allowed to rename.

Either way this magical app mark is working on seems amazing. I'm guessing it would be kind of like itunes or iphoto or something? thumbnails of the movies and metadata and playlists or albums or bins or whatever you call them? Damn, can we start a 'speculation' thread for what this app will be like? =]

Come on Mark i am just kidding ..:usd: sorry if you feel that i am serious
of course i like it and will pay for it
i agree everyone has skills must have fair income for his skill.it is not fair that you worked hard on something while others scratching heads wasting thier time having everything for free.
it happened to me a lot befor .working too much and someone came from no where taking everything easly even without saying thanks .

Understood Bassam - I was just venting in general - not at you specifically - but we are starting to think about how the project can be financially successful, so enough resources can be added and it can actually get done - remember - right now we are building a working proof of concept with a limited feature set - the total feature set and the master design of the app is pretty crazy - we will see - our lead programmer LEE is busting his ass. Give us a few weeks and most likely we'll release some details.

Mark,
These tools will be huge assets to fellow Red shooters, DITs, data wranglers, etc. I would gladly pay for a solid app that can make my life a bit easier, since I don't have programming skills. So I hope you guys get that kind of response from most people and will find it worthwhile to pursue selling this app(s) to us.

Thanks!
Steve

champe, what's your current data workflow?

Our first shoot was a commercial with about 95% 2k slow motion shot at 60fps, camera on a dolly constantly moving. We fed the preview out to an AJA iO HD. Outputs from that went to an HD monitor on the dolly for operator, client HD monitor (TV), and MacBook Pro with Final Cut which was used as slo-mo playback for client. Three 8GB cf cards were used and copied to a 1TB portable raid 1 drive using another MacBook Pro. A second copy was also made to another portable drive. The cf cards were labelled A, B, C and were used and copied in that order. When a full card was removed from the camera it was taken to a separate table where both copies were made, then it was put back in its plastic box ready to be formatted and reused. With the camera almost constantly recording there was just enough time to get the cards copied and back to the camera without interrupting the workflow, but 3 cf cards is about the bare minimum for a shoot like that. I can't wait for my drive and EVF.
Hope this helps, sorry it took me a day to get back to you.

I've been wondering whether anyone's come up with a bullet-proof/fail-safe way of transferring CF cards? The big worry is, of course, that material hasn't been taken off of a CF card before it's returned to the camera for formatting. If it was possible to format the card on a separate computer then the card was handed back to the camera assistant who would try to format the card on the camera. If there is still footage left on the card (i.e. if the DIT has either failed to back up the CF card or else forgotten to format it) the camera will warn you that there are shots still on the card before formatting (cue angry tellings-off of DIT etc etc ;-)
Does this make any sense to anyone or are there more obvious fail-safes out there that people are using to guarantee all their footage is coming off the cards before they're formatted?

Sure makes sense to me. This issue is about protecting against human error. I don't want the camera department to format anything. When you shoot film - the loader is responsible for putting the right stock in the mag, prepping it correctly - it's done ahead of time. We've shot two features on the Red, and on both we used a very, very primitive "fail-safe". We had a small box that the ACs would drop cards with footage on them - and another small box that would our RED TECH would put cards in after he cloned them twice. We are working on a solution that would allow you to NOT format on the camera at all.

An earlier post by one of the RED tech team (I forget who, or where) stated that the risk with formatting 'off camera' was that the camera has a few extra steps it takes - things that ensure it increments the reel count and possibly other things.

Although Offhollywood certainly makes it sound like he knows a lot more about the process than the rest of us.

If you are using windows, I could create a file copy verification tool (very quickly, for free), but there`s probably something already available. I`ll look into it. If its important PM me.

Thanks for the offer, it's good to know we have so many resources here. I already have file sync utilities and verification software. My question is does the camera format the CF card differently than just a straight format from the PC. ie right click the mounted drive and choose format. What is the difference, other than a process to minimize mistakes?

Chris
