Hello,
I am going to start initial shooting in a little more than two weeks on the RED camera, This is the first time our production company has used the RED ONE. I'm on a 24 in. iMac with a 3.06 gHz processor and ATI Readon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, and a 1TB 7200-rpm serial ATA internal hard drive, and 6gb of ram. What I am running up against is, what should i use for a RAID, I have been told that a 2-bay 2TB RAID 1 would be good, I am a little confused for its my first time with red and only my second feature film. Also we will be shooting for 3 weeks so I need a solution to store 3 weeks of files for a 10 million dollar feature.

Thanks so much in advance for the help.

Hi Axton,

Do a bit of reading around here and use the search engine, you'll find a lot of great information.

To answer you directly, 2TB will not likely be enough. Assuming they'll shoot 4K 16:9 RC36 at 23.98fps. ONE HOUR of footage is about 115GB. Now if you're doing about 90 minutes a day, tahts about 170GB a day. Assuming a 5 day week, thats about 850gigs a week or about 2.5TB for the whole feature.

My advice; Look at the Lacie 4-Big Disk with at least 4TB http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=11113. This way you can connect FW800 to your iMac.

Cheers

make sure you know how many cameras production is shooting as well. I have never been on a show where I haven't needed at least 10TB's of storage for at least 3 redundant backups of the data. If production is fine with only 2 backups that's still 6TB's you will need. Remember, even if you only shoot a total of 2.5TB's for the entire show you will not want to run your drives down to nothing. That will risk failure and you don't want to have to go to your producers and say, "the entire movie is gone!". Better to be safe than sorry. Get 2 hot swappable Weibetech cases or something similar and buy 6 1TB or Three 2TB internal drives that you can hot swap on location. Its easy and simple to do and is a fairly inexpensive alternative to a larger RAID setup. Then you can connect via esata or firewire800 whatever your fancy.

Good Luck!

What role are you playing? Are you just making an on-set backup to send to the post house? Are you the entire archive for the film? Are you making dailies?

If it's a $10m film, they're probably bonded... Bonders will want a certain spec for on-set and off-set backup.
