Hi,

Is it possible to recover data from a REDMag? If so, do you have any tips on the process? After how many formats of the drive can you still recover data?

Thanks for your help and advice.

Jeremy

It doesn't matter how many times you format the mag, what matters is have you recorded anything else on the mag?

The way the camera records after a format is that it starts at the beginning of the drive and then records until it fills up at the end.

So, if you shot 45 minutes of footage to a mag, and then formatted the mag 10 times without recording anything else, you'd be able to recover all 45 minutes. If you formatted the mag, then recorded 10 minutes, then formatted and recorded 8 minutes, you'd still be able to recover everything from the 1st recording from beyond 10 minutes until the end of the recording.

if you're on OS X, you can run red undead (available from the red.com/support page) and there are instructions on how to run it in the download. Make sure to use the sudo command.

Did it work for you?

I'm not so sure. I'd say if you shot anything at all after a format, your chances of data recovery could be quite variable due to the write-levelling of the Redmag card firmware. I've also heard some anecdotes about write fragmentation caused by the camera (the suggestion being that every so often you should choose the 'secure format' option to clear the fragmentation)
