  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Data Rate Calculator iPhone app

Is there anything with Redcode 5:1, 6:1 etc something like this with high speed and HDRx would be so beneficial. This is something a lot of us would pay for. Sign me up on the pre-order!

A colleague and I were checking that app out the other day. We were on two scarlets, both using 64gig cards and identical settings (including compression of course) and I was getting about 6 minutes more per card than he was on his Scarlet which raised many questions, including the accuracy of the apps estimates...

REDCODE is a variable bit-rate compression. So the amount of detail present in a shot can effect the amount of data used. There may have been other factors at play too, depending on the circumstances and camera settings. Unfortunately, this is the downfall of all these data calculators out there -- there's no way they can account for such variables in the compression, most all of them simply work off the various recording time tables posted on here by RED or others, or make use of frame size/depth and intended compression ratio. Real-life never works out that way... So the best you get is a ballpark estimate, usually within about 10% or so. And that can be huge at times.
