I was thinking the other day, when copying a CF or RedDrive to 2 backup drives which would you rather do? (When using a macbook pro)

1.Plug Red Media into fw800 and Plug both backup drives into expresscard 2x Esata ports

or

2. Plug Red media into 1 port of esata Expresscard and backup into the other esata port. (then obviously swapping out to the next drive once the first is finished)

To me, #1 seems obvious but is there every a problem with copying to 2 drives at once?

*I am not a DMT or DIT, simply a curious AC!

With R3D Data Manager you can copy to up to 4 destinations at the same time with a single read from the source - unlike finder copies with have to read from the source for each destination.

All the above are good options, but the fastest is to not ever use firewire. In that case what many people do is use a port multiplier and plug all 3 items into the 2 ports of the eSATA express card at the same time - source on one port, eSATA multiplier and destinations on the other.

You can't plug a Red Drive into eSATA, although that is an option for CF.

What multiplies would you recommend for both the port multiplier and the esata multiplier?

I guess another option using the new MacBookPro 17" could be:

- Mobile Red Rocket connected to the PCIe slot so you can transcode to ProRes or Avid files
- RED Station SSD to the FW800 - for offloading footage
- Backup media through the Thunderbolt - daisy chain 2 drives together

That is until Maxx Digital release their Mobile RED Rocket with Thunderbolt (which they are working on) and the RED Stations have Thunderbolt (which I am sure they are working on - probably!) then everything can run off the one connection. :-)

Yea, a mobile red rocket would be great! I was mostly curious about the red jobs where their is no DIT/DMT and the production simply pays to rent my macbook and I dump the footage at the end of the day. Sadly this is becoming the norm on independents and small commercials. (I do not even advertise this service, it is requested!)

I find that the best combination is red drive to fw800 and destination raid to esata to express card slot via adapter + production drive to second esata slot on the adapter. Giving you the most bandwidth available off the destination drives when reading for checks after copy.
Though
Not to far into the future the question will be whether to replace our older Macbookpros with newer ones for thunderbolt ports providing redstations will come with thunderbolt. Buying up on redstations with esata now seemes abit of a waist if this does happen as we will need esata port multipliers for the destination drives for the most efficiency. Perhaps the best solution is multiple interface redstations esata/fw800 and thunderbolt. This covers all basis and gives the most use out of current and future gear.

Bump!

Can anyone recommend any decent Port Multiplier and eSATA multipliers?

Sorry I should have posted this with my first reply. I have been looking at this as an option: http://www.siliconmemory.com.au/content/sohotank5610-4S-SB2.html
All my data setups have stardom enclosures as I find them very well built robust and comply with the read/write specs stardom boast Unlike others. Though I have hi hopse for this unit as a Sata port multiplier I don't have any field experience with it yet. Would be great to read if someone has...
