  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Darren Aronofsky's Blackswan

Three of my favorite people - Aronofsky, Mansell and Portman.

Can't wait to see this!

Aronofsky desperately wants to present himself as an artist that is a pretty old trend of many Americam filmmakers.

Does he want to make the same trick?

Of course I still didn't see the movie and can't tell anything...

My take on Aronofsky, at this point, is that his confidence took a bit of a blow from the negative reaction to THE FOUNTAIN... though some of us consider it a masterpiece. And this came at a time when his peers like Nolan and PTA were having tremendous success.

Aronofsky has obvious done a couple of smaller, 16mm films -- WRESTLER, SWAN -- since then. THE WRESTLER was very successful.

Tom, agree.

So let him again get something at Lido Cinema Palace in Venice Film Festival...

I agree about 'The Fountain' 100%
I find it interesting tho that he's seemed to switch to this 16mm doco style now in favor of his more "produced" looking film prior to 'the wrestler'

Also Libatique is a huge fan of Grain and would often frame wider to blow up his 35mm shots by 30%. So shooting 16mm is def his thing :)

This looks very close to Maryse Alberti's style on 'The Wrestler'

You know my feelings on The Fountain, Tom. Saw it seven times in the small time it was out in cinemas...

I've been thinking like you, that his confidence got knocked down a peg with the reaction to The Fountain. Which is a shame. I'll watch anything that Aronofsky does but the Wrestler was my least favourite film of his. Artists evolve over time, of course but it's a shame that Aronofsky's leaving his meticulously framed and blocked work as he was so good at it.

Still, Black Swan looks fantastic. Can't wait. Aronofsky+Libatique+surreal erotica sounds good to me.

Actually from interviews he's stated he was shellshocked when The Fountain
fell apart as a bigger studio film. Remember Brad Pitt bailed at
the last minute to do Wolfgang Peterson's Troy...so right at the 11th
hour the studio pulled the plug on the picture after it was already in
Pre-Production. That he regrouped and got it made a couple years
later independently was an accomplishment in and of itself.

But it seems like that formalistic style he shot the first two movies on
fit on those smaller films. But it was too limiting. Just too much centerpunching...
..he had to loosen up his style of shooting and working in order to progress.
People are really going to be looking how Mila Kunis does in this film.

The 16mm actually looks pretty great, IMO. And judging by the trailer, the movie looks fantastic. Can't wait.

Although I agree with what everyone has stated thus far, I am glad he has keeping it relatively small. He appears to be making the films he wants to make. Which is good because I like these kind of films far more than larger budgeted films. I only wish Brian Singer had gone a similar way.

BS looks amazing. Great casting Vincent Cassel is such a great and strong actor, Natalie Portman can hold her own, and I do like Mila Kunis. She did a good job with what was an adequately written role in 'The Book Of Eli, she actually showed emotional depth, which is more than the film deserved (eventhough I did quite enjoy the movie-it was better than I was expecting). I think she has got the ability to be very believeably expressionistic. Whether she can express as well as Jeanne Moreau is another story but I think she will only grow as an actress - lets just hope she chooses the right roles.

All I want from Aronofsky is to keep making the films he's being making. All have been way above par. Regardless of what the community thinks of him. The further he stays away from bigger budgets, the better. Talent will work with him, and he will choose them well.

He just needs to keep on fighting, and we'll keep on watching. Good luck to the guy.

I somehow haven't seen The Fountain, but I LOVED all his other films. The Wrestler, Requiem, Pi.

Blackswan immediately looks like it's part of the same body of work as those, the same project. And that's perfect, can't wait!

It seems, Darren Aronofsky's work is going the same route as M.Night's. Mind blowing early movies, and the trend continues with signature subjects/techniques/(twists).

How long will it take before Darren Aronofsky becomes another M.Night. Will you see Michael Bay as another good filmmaker if he came up with a movie like 'The Fountain' or 'Citizen Kane' ? Is Jim Cameron really the master filmmaker?

He could shoot with 7D PL version and achieve almost the same image quality adding grain in post...

It's more or less to deal with a grain size of the film stock look you can chose.

Below are some of examples shot on 7D with Kodak and Fuji film print stock variations at several different grain sizes added in post:

I agree completely.

Often times we place our own expectations upon the artists whose work we love. What it should look, sound, or feel like, when in fact, the inspiration that caused them to create that work may have evolved or otherwise changed.

All that being said, I'd like to see Aronofsky return (at least once more) to shooting in the style you mentioned Eren. The "craftsmanship" was amazing and created a tone that was all his own, IMHO.

Black Swan looks awesome though! Didn't know it was shot on 16mm.

Cheers,

Omar
