In case you guys had not seen it:

Dalsa is selling its unprofitable camera division to Arri and then working with Arri on new sensor chips.

We posted on http://www.fxguide.com about it and links to the financials.

That's certainly significant development. I guess Arri will benefit greatly from what looks like a fire sale.

I think DALSA's sale is not coincidental with soon to be anounced EPIC, which will almost certainly eat into DALSA's profits to some extent. I think they knew what is coming to the market place.

It will be interesting to watch how Arri capitalises on the acquisition. They seem to be shifting business model from rental to sales, which would compete in the same space as RED.

Illya's currently on extended paternity leave from Dalsa because his wife recently gave birth to their first child. I don't know what his plans are, but he's certainly had other things on his mind.

Dalsa is not folding. They are working with Arri on their sensor design. And they have their cameras, the Origin and the new Evolution, fully functional. The Evolution is finally a real product that I believe is currently shooting a feature. No one has ever claimed that the Dalsa cameras delivered anything other than stellar images. This was a business decision. Dalsa is also looking for a buyer for it's rental operation next door to Panavision in Woodland Hills. It's quite the facility, interconnected with Infiniband cabling, machine shops, optical benches, rental facilities and an excellent screening room. If the Red Ranch had not already been announced I know what I'd be suggesting...

So, in a year Dalsa, Arri and Panavision digital will be one? :)

I didn't get to see the F35 demo here in Norway, but concidering that Sony hasn't sold ONE F25 to Norway, while has about 60 RED orders from here...

So Arri is going to try and get ahead by teaming up with a company that has 5 year old technology that's too big and too clunky?

It's kind of a shame to see them go. I've found the presentations by Dalsa employees at my local Toronto SMPTE meetings to be informative, Dalsa has some cool stuff (e.g. realtime 4k debayer), and they don't crap on competing companies or their technologies.

And this is where I rant about:
Panasonic crapping on mpeg2 and Sony monitors, Grass Valley crapping on non-JPEG2000 compression, etc. etc.

Hopefully Arri will do something good with Dalsa's technology.

Arri and Dalsa...ok, so how much? 400.000 or 500.000 Euro per camera?

Two years ago I wrote here at the forum that RED1 in a near future will owe digital cinema acquisition market.

Nobody believed then or they were all skeptical.

So today we have the situation that is written like in the had of this tread...

That's all thanks to RED1.

Also RED1 still need and should to get some fixes in hardware, software/workflow.

EPIC and SCARLET still have to be announced and then we can see what should be the RED company next step.

Red is also not profitabale

What you wrote means that Red is also not profitable. It may be profitable for the Red company which sold more than 4000 units and accessories, but not to the owners.
I think Red owners know it by now.

sorry but I never said Red was unprofitable ???
If I implied that I am sorry but I never said Red was involved in this Dalsa thing at all.

How to be miss quoted hey mate. I think some people are just blinded colour RED.

Re: Dalsa arri deal, Looks the chess pieces are moving into place for the big DIGI game.
I'm so hoping EPIC shoots at least 500FPS when it comes out. I'd felt like I'd died and gone to cinematography heaven!
Saves me hiring those bloody Phantoms. (good camera though)

pana/arri vision/dalsa respectively

pana/arri vision/dalsa respectively

honestly im suprised, yet happy, the big dogs( Pana/Arri) let the hare have such a running start.Seems from the likes of Jim's comments RED(hare) plans on putting it in another gear.If thats the case, and i suspect it is, seems there nothing left to buy(dalsa/vision res.) in attempts to catchup...

I didn't say you wrote that, I said it means that....
I am not Red blind I really do hope it will make a return to its owner I just still not seeing it happening 14 months after public released and mostly because of heavy post work flaw.

Moreover I think that 90% of the Red cameras out there are NOT justifying the shelf space they occupy. Once again, I don't say that their image result is bad, it is much nicer than the Sony F900 CineAlta (but then gain a good story is what important).
See the description of this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/RED-ONE-CAMERA-...ryZ31388QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
"... RED CAMERA (#241) This camera is barely used, as new. It has been unboxed and some test shots...thats it!..."

So based on a sample of 1, you conclude that the owners of approximately 3,600 Red One cameras aren't making money?

I have seen heard and know of more than 1 sample.
90% is semantic meaning the majority.
I don't know what is your idea of making money.
Making money is in another business.
But yes I do think that in relate to what this camera gives, there is no money in it only good image.
It was suppose to take more market share from beta digital video and HD and it doesn't
