  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

D.I.T's - Carts, Transport and Travel

Looks like someone else Modified a UPS too! Its one of the best ways to get a cheaper better Power Solution. I use camera 24v Battery Blocks in a pinch if I can't run a small generator.

Yup. I have yet to benchmark this, but I'm hoping I can get close to 30 minutes running everything here plus 2 external HDDs. (though I'd no doubt kill the power-hungry client monitor most of the time on battery) Just yanked out the alarm buzzer and spliced in two leads for the two 33ah SLA's in series.

Still working on mine... The Dreamcolor is on a rolling monitor stand but not hooked up at the moment. I just need a UPS and a RAID to fill up that 4U of rack space on the left.

The Mac Pro is not bolted in place, but it also won't come out easily without pulling it securely. This makes it easy to access the inside the machine quickly.

How many Amps do you pull? And Whats the Amperage on the batteries?

The batts are each 12v, 33ah wired in series for 24vdc, since that is what my Tripp Lite UPS runs. I haven't tried to test for spikes during startup of any of the gear, but I figured out that when I'm running EVERYTHING, including overestimating for 2 external HDDs, I'd draw no more than 700w. Any spikes notwithstanding, that should be about 6-7 amps.

I don't have a RAID running right now, it may require a UPS upgrade later. Mine is rated for 900w.

Hey Curran.
I really like your rig. It seems like the perfect size. Who makes that case and what's the model number? What are the dimensions?

thank you,
Michael

Here are the specs on what I got so far:

MacPro 3.2GHz. 8-core
RED Rocket
CadLock Mac Pro Rackmount - <link>
CadLock Mac Pro Caddy - <link>
SKB 12U Roto Shockmount Rack 20” deep - <link>
Rock N Roller All Terrain R12 Multi Cart - <link>
Highland Triple Strength Stretch Locking Cords - <link>

I had to cut a couple inches off the rails used for the CadLock mounts. The SKB case is 20" from the front to rear rails.

Also, the doors stick out a couple inches but that extra space allows you to leave all the cables plugged in to the back of the computer.

Thanks Curran.

UPS Test Run

UPS Test Run

Did a test run on the cart off the UPS battery setup, everything was still running after 90 minutes, which is great!

"Everything" included partial use of an external HDD. The MacPro has 5 internal drives (OS+4 drive software RAID) and a Red Rocket card, running wifi and bluetooth accessories. ioHD powered up and my 23" computer monitor and 24" broadcast monitor running 1080/23.98 playback from the Rocket.

I haven't just let it run until it quits, but I'm fairly certain I can probably get 2 hours of non-AC operation with this current setup with fully charged batteries.
