  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Customizing your camera with build 3.2.x

Scott, thanks for sharing your solutions for others to see.

An observation I have is that both your solutions are dealing with the false color mode. If you were to use both of your solutions at the same time (for example, with one assigned to the A button, and the other assigned to the B button) there might be unexpected interactions. For example, if you cycled the exposure/video button to the step right before it returned to OFF and then started to cycle through your focus/edge button all the way back to OFF, the next time you press the exposure/video button it would appear to do nothing since you are already in the OFF mode.

A fix would be to tie the two solutions together into one solution so that when you are cycling through one of the modes the other button will be assigned so that it will start its respective cycle on the next press. I hope I've made it clear what I mean.

Again, thanks for sharing your solutions and I encourage others to do the same. I hope I've made the point clear that my examples are intended to be jumping off points for you guys to see what is possible.

Yes, the situation you describe results in two successive False Color Off commands, but that isn't a problem for me. I see the description of the executed command on screen so I know what is happening and I just continue to cycle the button. It's a simple solution to an infrequent or even rare occurrence.

I can see how that might be unacceptable programming from a professional standpoint, but my standards are apparently not as demanding. ;-)

It doesn't appear to cause a problem for the hardware.

How do we now set our camera to have the top rotary wheel on side handle change settings such as aperture with it only being highlighted and not actually selected. I really miss my cam doing this

The action name has changed. I'm not in front of a camera right now but I think they are called: slot: select prev/next. That action will allow the wheel to modify the currently selected slot.

Also, I believe there is a preloaded preset for alternate key mappings which maps the front rotary to those actions.

I've run through these examples several times, but I'm still unclear on the concept. In the case of the Scarlet, it seems to me that it would be useful to have the still mode key on the front of the side handle set the resolution to 5K, the frame rate to 12FPS, REDcode to 5:1, and focus mode to still (whatever that is.) The converse of that would be that the movie mode key would restore your most commonly used settings, say, 4K, 24FPS, REDcode to 6:1, and the focus mode to movie.

Is it possible to create a preset for both of these groups of settings and assign each preset to the appropriate key?

Thanks,
Curtis

That is exactly the type of thing you can do. You just need to create your two presets with the appropriate properties and then map those presets to the movie/still button.

I'm happy to go into more detail if you let me know which part you are unsure about.

My grasp of preset theory is definitely incomplete. As I understand it, I can create a preset by:
・ selecting the settings I want to include in my preset by setting them through the menus prior to entering the preset menu.
・ I create a new preset by selecting the “create” button at the bottom of the preset window and giving the new undefined preset a name.
・ I then select the functions that I want to include in my preset from under the various tabs. This will imbed the values I set for each function in the menus prior to entering the preset menu.

OK, on the off chance I'm correct so far, this is where my brain freezes up. Under the “Project” tab, of the functions I'm looking for, I can find REDcode, Sensor Frame Rate, and Project Frame Rate. [BTW, they might be easier to find if listed as “Frame Rate, Project” and “Frame Rate, Sensor.”] I have not found “Resolution” which I thought I would need for the 5K setting, nor have I found “Focus Mode: Still”, the default for the Still key. This makes me think my understanding of the theory is fundamentally flawed.
・ Once I make it past this hurdle, I'm unclear on whether I should also select “SH Still Select” from under the Key tab.
・ I then complete the preset process by selecting the Create button at the top of the preset window.
・ I have to then go to Settings => Setup => Keys to assign my preset to the Still key.

I appreciate the effort the RED team has put into creating this functionality and your time and effort spent explaining it; thanks,

Curtis

You are completly on track. The only thing you're missing is how to map the settings to preset parameters - and that is really just a lack of documentation on our part. I'm out of the office until Monday - when I get back I'll try to put out a quick description for each parameter and let you know which ones you need for your presets.

The resolution is called Format I believe.

Hey, that works! Never did find "Focus Mode: Still" or "Focus Mode: Motion," but "Record Format" is the function used to set resolution.

Very neat. I can now use the S and M slider (that sounds a little off color) to switch all my parameters from motion to 5K stills and back -- my Scarlet is now a real DSMC -- cool.

I hesitate to switch while recording. Would that jamb up the system?

And this exercise has led to two more questions:
  1. How do I edit my presets after they have been created? If I highlight a preset from the Camera Presets list I don't seem to be able to access it. I see "Apply," "Delete...," and "Create..." but no "Edit."
  2. I noticed SH user keys 1-7 as well as SH user keys A-D and UI Softkeys 1-4 & A-D in the "Key" tab of the preset window. I assume user keys 1-4 are the keys on the top of the side handle. How do I access SH user keys 5-7 and the UI Softkeys?

Thanks again,
Curtis

I'm glad you got most of this working. I'll have to double check on Monday if the auto focus mode (still vs. movie) is available to save in a preset or not. If not it is a good candiate to add in the future.

Things like changing the format are ignored during recording. However, there may be settings in your preset that you don't want to apply accidentally during record (like exposure time). Perhaps we could have a global or per preset "lock out applying presets during record" option.

Unfortunately there is no way to "edit" or "update" an existing preset, just overwrite it. We hope to add this feature in the future.

SH keys 5-7 are the keys on the inside of the sidehandle (Between the ABCD keys and the brain). The easiest thing to do is just press all the keys on the main key mapping dialog to see what it is.

The UI Softkeys are appearing in the list in error (it is an incomplete feature that may or may not make it into a future build :) )

This is currently not something that can be saved in a preset - we will look into adding it possibly in the future.

Thanks for checking.

Since these functions are not assignable, can I safely assume that they are currently place holders for future settings? Or, should I go back and reset the movie key to its default to make sure my camera is in "focus mode: motion" before using that key for a preset? (Or, should I not be messing with the M/S slider at all?) Sorry to keep after this, but I'm not sure what the functional difference is between the still and motion focus modes.

Thanks,
Curtis

Is it possible to make two presets that just change resolution, framerate, redcode "compression". Then you could switch between slowmo and regular speed in a button push.

Wish build 3.0.7 had the revamped PRESET and KEY MAPPING features. I think i will wait for the 3.2.8 to come out of beta.

Hi Joel,

I have just made 2 presets to toggle between 5K 25fps and 2K 240fps, using button 1 on the side SSD.

Not sure how to share them here though...

Antony

The original actions for the M/S slider allow for two different focus modes at a time - one for "motion" and one for "stills". For example, you could set up auto focus single for "stills" mode and then confirm for "motion" mode. If you change the focus mode while in "stills" mode when you go back to "motion" mode it will restore it to the last focus mode you had in "motion" mode.

If you don't want this feature it is safe to remap the key to the presets as you have.

I like what you've done - you should post a detailed tutorial on this thread for others to learn from.

OK, got it, thanks.

In that case, I can do without the still and motion focus modes, so here's the M/S slider actions I substituted. It might also serve as another example of a single preset that performs several actions.

What I was trying to accomplish:
Since the Scarlet is only able to record 12FPS at 5K, I wanted to be able to quickly and easily switch from my most common motion settings to settings for 5K stills and back again. The M/S slider on the front of the side handle seemed perfect for this.

The parameters I wanted to change:
For stills mode:
  1. Resolution to 5K (Listed as “Record Format” in the list of project actions. See 7 and 8 under "steps required.")
  2. The sensor frame rate to 12FPS. The project frame rate apparently can't be set lower than 23.98 FPS, so, when you switch to still mode, you'll see “Varispeed” at the bottom right of your display instead of the audio channel levels.
  3. REDcode to 5:1
  4. The default action, “Focus Mode: Still,” cannot be mapped to a preset so I abandoned the default action.

The setting for motion mode can be whatever parameters you use most often, as an example:
  1. Resolution to 4K
  2. Project and sensor frame rates to 24 FPS
  3. REDcode to 6:1
  4. Again, the default action, “Focus Mode: Motion,” cannot be mapped to a preset so I abandoned the default action.

The steps required for stills mode:
  1. The first step is to establish the actions you want to assign to the preset. You accomplish this by setting the parameters listed above for stills mode in the primary menus at the top of the touchscreen or EVF display.
  2. After using the menus to set your still parameters, begin the creation of a new preset by opening the “Presets” menu from the secondary menus.
  3. Select the “Create...” button at the bottom of the presets window, this will open a “New Name” bar at the top of the window.
  4. Select this bar and a keyboard will open in the window. Enter a name for your new preset. I suggest including all of the embedded parameters in the name for the motion preset. You can only assign one preset at a time to a key, and I don't want to confuse the issue, but, you might want to have more than one preset that you can assign to the motion key at different times, i.e., different frame rates or Kelvin, etc.
  5. Select the “OK” button to the far right of your new preset name.
  6. Select the “Project” tab. This will open a list of project actions on the left side of the window.
  7. From this list select REDcode and then select the “-->” button to the right of the project list, or press the enter button on the side handle; this will map a compression ratio of 5:1 into your preset. “REDcode” will appear in the list on the right of the preset window. After you map the first action to your preset a “Create” button will open at the top right of the preset window. Ignore it until you have mapped all the actions to your preset.
  8. Repeat the previous step for the remaining actions:
    • Select “Record Format,” the action name for the resolution you previously set to 5K in the primary menus.
    • Select “Sensor Frame Rate,” which you previously set at 12 FPS in the primary menus. (You could also select “Project Frame Rate,” but I don't think it would do anything since the project frame rate doesn't seem to go below 23.98.)
  9. You should now see “REDcode,” “Record Format,” and “Sensor Frame Rate” listed in the sub-window to the right. Select the “Create” button at the top right of the preset window and you have created your still preset. The preset window should close and a pop-up message should appear saying something to the effect that the preset has been successfully created.

The steps required for motion mode:
I'm going to cop-out here and just say repeat the steps for the stills mode using the motion parameters listed previously: Resolution to 4K, project and sensor frame rates to 24 FPS, REDcode to 6:1. (Or whatever settings you normally use.) Set these in menus. In this case you also can go to the secondary menus and select Settings→Project→Time Base and there you can select the project frame rate that you normally use. This will allow you to set the project frame rate as well as the sensor frame rate in your motion preset. Then open the preset window again and create your motion preset.

Assigning your stills and motion presets to the proper keys:
  1. From the secondary menus, select Settings→Setup→Keys.
  2. Push the S/M slider on the front of the side handle to the right to select the stills mode. On the left side of the window you should see “SH Still Select:” From the drop down list on the right, scroll through the list of actions until you find your stills preset. The names are in alphabetical order, so your preset will be toward the top. It will be listed under “A” as “Apply Preset: yada yada” where “yada yada” represents the name you applied to your stills preset. Select this and the drop down window should close, leaving only your stills preset listed.
  3. Push the S/M slider to the left and repeat step two for your motion preset.

I'm open to any corrections or improvements,
Curtis

Can someone post the actual files generated by the camera? I'd like to poke around but don't have access to a camera.

Thanks Curtis Stanton
and Trent Lillehaugen
This really worked for me to switch between Stills and Motion mode
This just make's Scarlet-X feel so much more functional and more and more of an awesome camera/tool
I felt like I was holding a new camera just as I completed these new functions ; )
Honestly
