With EPIC-X about to be hitting us in the near future, I was wondering as to how customizable the packages are?

E.g. a policy a la "If you don't take component X, you get $Y in store credit", would be awesome (where of course $Y would be less than the price of X). But I understand that it would be a nightmare for RED and the poor Bomb Squat people.

Especially with the 9" LCD nearing productions, it would be great to be able to get a BOMB EVF instead of the 5" monitor. (Again, I would of course expect to pay up for it, and some extra)

For Canon shooters w/o PL glass, it would be great to get some money off the Canon TI mount in exchange for the PL TI mount.

Some people will want the REDmote pro rather than the one that comes in the package.

Some people might prefer the Side handle over the battery module.

Etc. etc.

Just a thought.

All the crap I wrote below in italics is wrong ... read the whole thread.

I think for the Stage 2&3 folks you get the package and that's that. I think the package looks like the Epic M kit, with 4 SSD, Bomb EVF, Red Pro Touch, case, and Ti PL mount.

Stage 4, a.k.a. general availability, seems to be the a la carté version. I expect that there will be a kit though, like the Epic M package in the New Releases section, which includes brain, side module and PL mount.

I am a little confused though ... I thought the Epic X package was now like the Epic M package, and that includes BOTH a BombEVF and the 5" Red Pro Touch LCD.

The rest of this is just my opinion.

Also ... the 9" monitor is big for certain applications. 5" is a nice size. I hope to own both.

If I had to pick just one though, I suppose I'd pick the 9" touch, and get a 5" third party LCD.

I swear that a while back it was said that things were upgradable,

So you couldn't say no to things but you could upgrade and pay the difference.

I.E the IO Module you could get the basic or upgrade to the pro and pay the difference and the same goes for everything else, it wasn't that you could say 'I don't need an IO Module can you give me credit instead'

If its upgradeable its possible to change it, if its not, like the side handle I don't think has like a pro side handle which is a bigger grip and fits the XL batteries, rather its just as is and I guess that's that...

I could be wrong...I suppose all will be revealed when the Stage 2 peeps get their emails right?

I don't think Stage 2 or 3 ever included any media and don't know where you got the idea that the Stage 2/3 packages are to be like the Epic-M package. The M package was always more extensive, which was a way to separate it from X packages and make it more tempting to jump on it, instead of waiting for 2/3.

All this is babbling about why I worte the wrong stuff above ... best ignored.

Just what I heard ... but now that you ask I can not remember the source, so maybe I am misremembering - or possibly I just made it up in a drunken stupor.

(I don't drink actually ... but you get the point.)

In any case ... the official X package has not been announced that I know of ... could be part of the "tidal wave" that Jim mentioned on another of his enigmatic non-announcement threads.

The M package was just different. In the M, you get a BOMB EVF and media, in the Stage II X you get a battery module and a module adapter. Obviously the EVF and media are worth more, but if you price out every individual component in the M package, you'll see you're paying the raw store costs for them. The Stage II kit, on the other hand, is a ridiculous value. Jim wasn't kidding when he said they were going to respect their early customers when Epic shipped.

You're right that Stage 3 was a little different than Stage 2, but we haven't heard anything about Stage 3 for ages. In the original post (you can view it here if you wish: http://red.cachefly.net/A/OctoberPost.jpg), Stage 3 came with a 2.8" LCD (which as far as I know, doesn't exist anymore). So they may be retooling that a bit. I'm sure we'll hear more soon as the first batch of Stage 2 cameras are slated to ship this week.

As for the "upgrading" of packages, Imran is right... originally it was stated that we would be able to upgrade from the base to the pro I/O module, but now there is no base module and the I/O module isn't being included in the package anymore. I don't think anyone can really extrapolate that to read that anything else in the package can be changed. My guess is that, like the M package, it is what it is and for simplicity's sake on their end, you just have to get the whole kit and caboodle. But I assume nothing anymore... we shall see soon enough. :)
